True Break In Period?

Hi All -

My first BMW will arrive in early Feb (335i M-Sport, tech, premium, 8AT, 19inch rims, etc.).

I have come across different opinions for the break in period:
i) 1,200 on this forum,
ii) 2,000 in the manual, I believe and
iii) 2,500 N/T/E 4500 RPM from my friend who has owned four BMW's - 330 coupe, 335 coupe, 335 sedan and X6.

I have also read that some people do not believe in the break in period.

Please help!

Much appreciated!

The manual says 1200 not 2000 miles

Car feels broken in at around 1,200 miles. I think the manual is sound.

My CA also advised to vary the speeds and to keep it below 4500 rpm.

The manual says "up to 1200 miles/2000 km not to exceed maximum engine and road speed (4500 rpm and 100 mph/160 kmh; avoid full-throttle operation and use of the kick down mode for the initial miles." (page 158)

Drive it like you stole it. I completely and totally discounted what the hundreds of BMW engineers and thousands of hours of testing came up with. And I could care less. It was liberating as hell, and I love every redlined minute of it. We keep hearing about the newest manufacturing techniques and lubricating properties of the new synthetic oils. Well good for them. I'm their worst nightmare, and it feels great.

I own my car. My cars have no problems what-so-ever by just following the manual. Plain and simple.

I own mine. However, I would still treat it the same way if I leased it.

Looks like owners actually follow break-in regs, while leasers do w/e they want. As you would expect. This is why I don't buy secondhand performance cars.

Wouldn't matter to me, I'd break in in right way bought or leased.

I'm not sure how much damage not doing the break-in period does to the car.
But not going by a recommendation in the manual seems idiotic, especially for such a performance and expensive car.
But then again people drive 80mph in snow with summer tires, eating cheeseburgers while talking on their cell phones.

Dude I just passed a woman reading some document while driving in the rain with a spare tire fitted to the front of her Fiesta. Oh and she almost bumped into me.
