I-Drive knob spins out of control

This experience has happened 3-4 times so far: I'm navigating through the I-Drive menus when suddenly the I-Drive knob starts freaking out. I pull my hands away from the knob and it keeps spinning out of control. It actually sounds like it's speeding up, then slowing down, then speeding up, meanwhile it makes loud revving sounds. It will continue to do that until I forceably stop the I-Drive wheel and press a few buttons to reset it. I found it to be really funny since its still a rare occurrence, and it's always great entertainment for my passengers. Has anyone else had this experience?

Does this usually occur after smoking the funny grass.j/k Anyways I wonder if something is wrong with the controller itself(might of drop something in there) I would take it in to service, I mean it is free.

Do you have steptronic? If so, it may have slipped out of Drive and gone into I-Drive.

That's never happened to me, but doesn't surprise me. The electronics in our cars, esp. the iDrive control are very temperamental. I occasionally get the SOS error message after which the iDrive knob will spin freely without resistance.

...my radio stations dont come in as soon as I turn on my lights...I wonder if its because of lux 4.0, either way, electronics can be extremely annoying.

Don't listen to these people I just took my car in for the very same thing. Sometimes it would stop and other times go for about 10 secs.

The dealer ordered a new knob and equip underneath and we shall see if that solves it.

Mine usually occured during nav use. I would zoom in or out and the comp would just take over....

I feel your pain.

I didn't know the knob was motorized. You guys are talking about the actual knob itself not the icon controlled by it on the screen right? That's messed up.

i dont have i-drive, but ive played with it, and i cant imagine why a knob would be motorized, when youre the one making the selections. a/c knobs, radio knobs, etc arent motorized.

Yeah, I'm not following. It's either a joke that I'm not getting or some serious BMW over engineering.

now that I think about it, i might remember the knob giving me some resistance for some reason when I played with idrive, although maybe im just making that up in an attempt to justify the use of a motorized knob

btw where in charlotte are you? Ive never seen another balck 335.

It is not so much motorized, but more like force feed back.

It is actually kinda neat to watch it spin. Unfortunatly, there is no control for a bit when it stops spinning. More frustrating. but what are you too do. Considering this is the most serious problem and I get a loaner while it is replaced for free, not bad.

I think of it like a mouse on a computer and the connector is even like a usb hook up. Happened again today, this time after spinning it stopped working and I could spin it freely. that is worse. I hate lack of control.

I was reading on another forum that they axed the force feed back mid model year. Basically if your car has the 6 buttons near the DVD slot it doesn't have force feedback.

Apparently the force feed back eats up a lot of memory and to get the Idrive to run faster without a major redesign they did away with it.

Does anyone know if there's a way to disable the force feedback?

When I'm using my navigation menu to spell out street names, I can spin the iDrive wheel freely but when I try to navigate my Ipod menu, I must use the force feedback. I hate it. It makes it so difficult to navigate large menus.
