Oil Burner?

Any one else seeing any oil consumption on an F30 335xi? Just shy of 1k miles and my oil level is down about 25%. Hope it's not an oil burner.

Is the "down 25%" where your measurement is when you run the utility to check the oil? If so, when it is at "min", you add a quart; and you're about a cup of oil lower than the max right now. There may be some "appropriate" oil consumption during the break-in period but don't know what that amount is. I put a half-quart of oil in mine at 4500 miles. I don't think this differed from my prior 3-series rides.

Measurement came from the onboard computer. My previous A6 required a quart of oil every 1k miles. That was the reason I dumped it. Guess I'll keep an eye on it. Friend of mine has had several different BMW's and he said that he's never had to add any oil between changes. Lets hope it's break-in pains.

At 3500 miles mine still read 100%. This reminds me maybe I should check it again to se3e where it's at now.

I check mine every week. Just a habit from the old days of a dipstick. But from iDrive you can measure your oil (less than a minute on level ground, car not moving, not touching gas, etc) and it gives you a measurement. There's a "max" level and a "min" level. At "min", add a quart. But the measurement will show 3 levels between "min" and "max". Is this where the computer is telling you? I've just added a half-quart in 4900 miles to date. I think this is in line with the last 335.

Measured via the iDrive controller. Mine only shows min and max with nothing indicated in between. Based the 25% on a very unscientific approach by breaking the space between min & max into four parts. From that it' off by about a quarter

Yup, that's how I take the measurement to be. When it was exactly between min and max I added half a quart and remeasured. Came back as max. Until we get a dipstick back, I think that's the best we can do.

Mine has gone through three quarts of additional oil in 15k... Dealer said it normal... Still skeptical but I will deal with it in the spring, she's in storage right now.

Wonder if its cause some people baby them to 1200 miles and the rings don't seat well.

1707 miles now and down another 25%. Rate of consumption seems to be increasing. Not a good sign. Will take it to the dealer when that faithful add oil warning light comes on.

5000 miles and down a tick under max...

Just picked it up from dealer at 7300 miles. They filled a quart apparently...so I consumed a quart in about 6000 miles.

Just added a quart at 2314. Rate of consumption seems to have gone up. 50% for ~600 miles. Dealer said it was normal (don't buy it) and it would subside after 5k miles. Vaguely remember a VW dealer saying the same crap. Beginning to wonder if the Germans have trouble making engines. My Frieda who all drive Lexus or Infinity never complain about oil consumption.

Seems odd to me. I'm at 7500miles and when I run the oil level (ran this morning) i'm still at 3/4's to Max. I've never added oil and I have the BMS stage 1 tune (last 700 miles).

My 2013 BMW 335i xDrive will arrive soon.

I am somewhat alarmed by N55 oil consumption. I have never had a vehicle which burned oil, or at least required oil being added by the quart every few thousand miles.

Did anyone start a dialog with BMWNA? Is this something that can trigger a return under lemon law provisions?

Not unless its catastrophic...it's semi common in turbo charged cars.

Did your gauge get to the "Min" level, and then you added a quart?

I'm at about 5K miles and I'm still reading Max.
Turbo's do tend to "use" more oil, but it shouldn't be at the rate of 1 quart every 2K miles.

That said, my E46 325i with an NA engine did need a quart by around the 12K mark, but after the first oil change it only used about 1//2 quart between changes, which were around 12K-14K miles.
My 135i was about the same even though it had the N54 turbo.
So, yes, consumption should slow down.
If it's going up, then BMW needs to take a look at it..

BTW, how did you do your break in? I ask for curiosity sake, as everyone has their preference.
I always do an aggressive break in procedure, meaning, I always let the engine fully warm up before any big throttle inputs, but my engines see redline a number of times well before 1K miles. I do this without using full throttle, nor WFO standing starts. I slowly increase RPM to red line in each of the first 3 gears, speed limits permitting, and then allow engine braking back down to around 1500 rpm. I do this with 1st gear, then 2nd, then 3rd, and as much as I can with 4th. The idea is to let engine braking/compression to naturally slow the engine down. This helps the rings seat as best as they can.
I also do a few aggressive acceleration runs getting to near red line before the first 500 miles.
I don't do any oil changes until it's time, meaning I don't change the oil after
"break in".
This is the method I've used for my cars and motorcycles and it's served me very well.

Pretty much did the same thing as you during break-in. Without a track it's hard to approach the redline after 3rd gear without running the risk of a major speeding ticket.

I hope it's just breaking pains. If it's a persistent issue I will know in about 600 miles when I recheck the oil level. Wish that damn gauge had more marks other than min & max.

Mine had been gonging over the weekend (1500 mile trip). Just added a quart and it seems like it's good to go again.

Mine drank 1 quart after the first 3000kms (1800 miles). BMW service told me it was normal during the break in period. After that, it shouldn't be drinking that amount of oil, although a little consumption is allowed and it is completely normal.

So far 6100 miles and 1 quart needed to date. For te first 1000 miles I didn't push it (higher than posted highway speeds nor redlining it).
