When to put key in?

I have a 2007 335i Sedan, I picked up about 2 weeks ago.

Have dis 57 loaded on laptop, via VMware, using a k-can, d-can USB cable.
Used this before on my 2003 E46 M3.
Work great except that when I click diagnosis.
It would not detect my vehicle automatically, had to select it manually, and still not sure if I selected the right one.

Since this e90 has a push start.
When and how do I put the key in to run a diagnosis using DIS.
Do I even need to?

I got some codes to clear and start diagnosing a shifting problem when on a slight hill going 30mph.
It doesn't seem to know which gear to lock into.

Rpm going 200 up, 200 down.
Idle is at 500-600, rough.
Vehicle has 50k miles on it.

Regards.
DN

Not familiar with dis but I assume all you'd need to do is just put the key in and push the start button without your foot on the brake. This should be done before attempting connection to the car

You connect the obd cable to car...Start the Dis program...When it fully loaded turn igniton on and try to connect...It will prompt you that the ignition needs to be turn off and then turn back on, and then open drivers side door...Once done it overrides some kind of voltage needed for dis to make connection...Once done try to make the connection to car

Thank you

Rich and CN.
Thank you, will try that.

Also, is there any issues on using USB 3.0 port?

Not that I am aware of. It should be backwards compatible for 2.0
