Have you owned a Porsche 911?

Has anyone here owned one? My favorite car of all time (Excluding 996s, because I won't even acknowledge them).

All I think about is buying a 964 C2 (would love a 93 RS America) or 87-89 G50 Carrera. I have the cash now, but am forcing myself to wait til my E90 is paid off (9/2014), so I don't have 2 payments.

Yes. 930, 964, 996, 997. Multiple variants of some.

The fact that you won't consider a 996 makes you pretty ignorant. So much more car than a 964 for barely more money. The air cooled cars are fun, and different, but a 3.6 996 is SO much nicer to drive. Not to mention the unbelievable value that 996tt are right now if you want a really fast and liveable car.

It doesn't make me ignorant. I don't like them, so why should I consider one? I think every other generation looks better than it. They may be nicer to drive, but they're "soft". I want a raw, classic 911. This will not be my daily.

Love how someone starts a thread to talk about something they like with one exception, then the only thing people respond to is the one exception..

I've always wanted a 911. The G50 Carreras are within my grasp, but it's hard to find one with low miles.

I'm a bit of an air-cooled kind of guy, but I'd not complain with a newer 3.6 TT waterpumper.

Didn't the first generation of water cooled flat six engines have bearing issues?

All I hear from P-car club members with the air cooled is how many problems they have

The 996's interior isn't as "flimsy" as the 997's.. it is more solid... not that those are words you can really use when referring to a Porsche as they are still built solid (don't know about 991)

I own 2 997. They are great cars for everything. They served me well for 2 years of daily drive, but it is time to garage queen them.

Owned a a 993 c2 and replaced with a 996 C2, had to sell 996 during divorce. Yes they had RMS/IMS issues but that was way over hyped just like the TT's losing coolant lines. I had the IMS guardian and it never signaled an issue. Would love to get a 40th anniversary 911.
As far as the 964 or other late model "air cooled" read oil cooled variants go. Maintenance is expensive, 996's are cheaper to own. For example the upper plugs of the two plug 993 motors are a bitch to get to, you need to get the car in the air and ramps won't cut it and you'll need to service those every 12K, oil filters are positioned way out of the way again up in the air it goes. LocaL P car tuner knew my 993 intimately IE saw it a lot.
Get what you want but I would drive all of them within your price range and buy the best car you can afford.

Just keep an open mind, that's all I'm saying. You asked if anyone has owned one, I've owned/driven them all, just giving you some advice. 997 are far and above the best cars, with 996 right behind. They certainly aren't all that soft either, they actually have a firmer ride than the aircooled cars, just more more compliant. The rawest of the raw would be a 996 GT3.

My 964 was very costly to maintain. Dual distributor = $1200. New clutch & RS flywheel = Big $$. Valve adjustments and gaskets = $200 + a big labor bill. Keep in mind a 964 is now 18-22 years old. Even in a well built car like a 964, things wear out.

The first gen 3.4 996, from 99-01 had their share of problems and tend to just grenade after a while.

Thing is, for the price of a 964 rebuild, you get 2 996 motors.

Let me reiterate: I don't care about 996s. I won't consider one. Personal opinion.

Understood. So why 964 over 993? Price?

They are both $30k dollar cars. Buy a 964 for $20k, you will spend $10k to make it right. Buy a 993 for $26k, you'll spend $4k.

I'm just more attracted to 964s. I would also not spend $20k on a 964 or $26k on a 993. I'll be shooting for a $25k 964 with moderate mileage. If I was going the 993 route, I'd shoot for $30-35k for a clean one.
Most modern cars can outperform 10-20 year old cars, so I'm not doing it for pure performance. I want one for the driving experience and 911 beauty.

I never owned one, but I grew up with a '72 911T and later a '86 Carrera Targa. Personally, I'd go with either a classic (eg, 1976 so it has the galvanized body) or a modern (eg, depending on budget, new 991 or slightly used 997.) I love the looks of the '98 993 C2S especially with the Aerokit, and that'd be my third choice. Neither 911 I mention above were entirely trouble-free, but IIRC the '72 went to 170k miles and the '86 hit 130k.

Good luck and budget for repairs and maintenance either way.

Me personally after owning two it's either a pristine garage queen 40th Anniversary 996 for the collectibility or a newer 997. I first hand know the cost of ownership with a very low mileage 993.

I'd love to get a new 991 base, however its about 15k over my budget. Maybe I'll wait a little longer to save some more cash or maybe I'll get a boxster/cayman, but I just don't know yet.

I do know that if I do get a 911, then I'd keep it for a long time.

993 C2S, 991, 997, etc. are big money. I'm not looking to spend $40k+ on a weekend driver 911.

76+ have galvanized bodies. 993 C2S, 991, 997, etc. are big money. I'm not looking to spend $50k+ on a weekend driver 911.
