Automatic transmission - Errorproof?
I did a quick search and can't seem to locate my answer; perhaps I'm not searching for the right thing. What I'd like to know is, if I'm in paddle (or handle) shifting, does the transmission take over if I get to redline and don't shift? I know it does when I'm slowing down and the RPMs are getting too low. I'm assuming that it does, but wanted to verify before that situation happens. Today I noticed I was hitting it fairly hard with the wheel turned, to the point where using the paddles became tough - I ended up letting off the gas and throwing it back over to D mode since I wasn't 100% sure what would happen. Thanks.

Would it be ingenious enough for a fool to move the selector from "drive" to reverse whilst doing 80 on the freeway?
I always wondered how that would feel. If it would quickly drop the drive train onto the pavement without much shudder. If it would toss me through the windshield. Or if... it really IS fool proof and would wait for a more suitable wheel speed. Someone load me their car and a helmet so I can find out! |

Someone load you their car and helmet? I think someone should teach you how to spell or use the english language better first. It's not like the D is close to the N on the keyboard for it to be a typo.

Last question on this topic...If you constantly drive in Manual mode (and shift within reasonable RPM ranges but diffrent from what DS mode does) will this tranny (the 328 version) live long enought to last me 70,000 miles or will it fall out dead and done after 25,000 miles?

It's cool to start off in 2nd, no problems there. But around town you should be using 3rd and possibly 4th depending on the speed. 40mph in 2nd is a bit fast. At 30mph the engine is already at about 3000rpm (you should use higher gear when possible to save gas) Also, if you're in manual mode, it will only upshift when you redline it. |
