Natural Gas - Fixed Rate or Government Rate? Which do you suggest?

Hey guys,

Its time for me to renew my natural gas services. Not sure if I should keep using a third part company (Direct Energy) with an option of either going with a fixed rate of 14.9/m3 for 1 year, or a fixed rate of 20.9/m3 for 3 years. OR if I should go back to my primary provider (Enbridge) where prices can change ever 3 months, but its been much less than 14.9/m3 over the past months.

Anyone dealing (or has dealt) with the same dilemma? What did you decide to do?

do not sign a fixed rate
cheap gas is here to stay for the next couple of years - take the floating rate

I am in the same situation and decided to go the floating rate route. I'm under the same impression that bulldog has in that I don't see gas prices increasing enough over the coming few years to bring any kind of savings and may end up costing a lot more instead.

no problem

Just for the record, the rate offered by Enbridge is not a government rate. Enbridge Gas Distribution is not owned by the government, but, its rates are regulated by the Ontario Energy Board (OEB), which has a good website for consumers if they have questions. The OEB regularly reviews Enbridge's rate filings to make sure consumers are always getting the lowest cost of gas supply. In fact, Enbridge is required to contract for gas supply and has multi year agreements in place to get gas to Ontario from a variety of pipelines. In a nutshell, its pricing will almost always beat the fixed rate providers.

Floating rate is my vote too. I dont foresee gas prices going up for atleast the next few years. There is tons of natural gas in North America, thats why we have record low prices right now.

When I first moved into my house, got hounded and convinced to sign a painful 5 year fixed natural gas contract.

Upon renewal, the company had to disclose the projected costs associated with the fixed rate contract vs. floating, decided to revert back to Enbridge floating.
