Solid-state HDD vs USB drives
Since solid-state disks consume less power than traditional hard disks, will you be able to use them instead of traditional USB drives in the centre console? They are both based on the same technology, memory chips and driver electronics. I've got a SATA to USB adapter, currently using it as a USB drive, 320gb of it (a bit bigger than your normal USB drive, hehe).

You can buy a SDD and a USB enclosure, it is no different than a disk based drive in that regard. It is just more expensive per GB, the only advantage for in car use though is that car vibration will not affect the drive, but as a media storage it is kind of wasted due to the price difference and the high performance of a SSD will be of no benefit.
Also i dont see the need for that much storage, a 32Gb or 64Gb usb key should cost around $40 and give you more music storage than you'd (legally) need. Also a lot smaller and easier to carry around. Last edited by jwickers; 07-24-2012 at 02:43 AM.. |

I do have two of the 320gb SDD drives supporting my 4 2tb's (booting from one of them, the other is configured as a virtual swap file), just thought in using them in the car, but very true what you said, 64gb should be way more than what is needed.

I would think for the price of one of those drives you could easily get an ipod classic that could work in or out of the car as a music player. Wish I had spare 320 gb solid state drives!

Using a SSD with a USB interface kind I defeats the purpose of an SSD doesn't it? The Max USB transfer speed is much much slower than the speed of an SDD. You'd gain no benefit since your speed is bottlenecked by transferring via USB

Do the USB ports in the F30 support USB 3.0?

Coming from a technical and systems design background, I can share the following with you.
You will never need the speed of a USB3 interface for audio or video transfer, unless you are going to be transferring HD and 5.1 surround in the car. The latter are not yet being catered for in any Beemir as far as I know. (Not yet, BMW please take note, hehe) Some of the technical data. Data transfer (RAW) USB3 - 5gbps USB2 - 1.5, 12 or 480mbps Bus power required USB3 - 900ma USB2 - 500ma Bus clock USB3 – spread spectrum USB2 – fixed spectrum Looking at the above, USB3 will be a total overkill.

I've used a LaCie low power 5600 RPM 60GB drive on my three 3-series cars no problems, never noticed much of a lag really.
