SES and fault codes

So I had the SES light trip on me and turn off after few restarts maybe 3 times before and always in the winter on cold days. Now I tried to use my friends cheap obd2 reader to see if I can find some codes and it said there is none or they are stored in cars computer. I just wonder what are my options other than just going to bmw dealer and pay stupid $100 to tell me what the problem is? Also are all codes really stored on the computer forever until they are erased? My guess is that my car is misfiring since I do get few rough idles from time to time. Any thoughts?

PS I didnt get SES since last winter.
