Looking for starter replacement DIY

I didn't take any pictures, but this is what I used even though mine was somewhat different. It should be pretty accurate for yours though. Even though one or two are listed, I didn't need any special tools. Everything is pretty standard, but if you don't have an external torx set, you will need one. I think I remember having to have an E12 or E14 bit for something. In addition to the starter, make sure you get two new bolts for the starter and a new intake manifold gasket set. These should be the part numbers for your car:

12417526236: Starter
12410392577: New Aluminum Starter Bolts
11617547242: The set of Gaskets for the Intake Manifold

And the Instructions:

One last thing, when you go to removing the intake manifold, for your engine you may have to move the power steering reservoir. You won't have to drain it, just undo the two bolts on the bracket that hold it onto the wheel well and swing it out of the way with the hose still attached. Otherwise, I think everything else is pretty much listed in those instructions. Good Luck. It really isn't that difficult of a job. It can be a little tedious though, so just be patient and you should come out fine.

What did you tighten the starter bolts too?

PDF instructions say 12 41? not sure what that means, somewhere else it says 20 nm? what is that in foot pounds torque?

I just replaced my starter on my 2006 330i with 66k miles, and would like to add a few comments.

1. go ahead and move the engine air filter box and inlet host to the intake (takes 15 min, but is a must)

2. go ahead and move the power steering bracket. Like mentioned above, no need to drain, just move the reservoir out of the way

3. The difficulty with the intake manifold (IM) is all the hoses, electrical connections that are either attached or routed around the intake at the bottom at the back (firewall side). Not being able to see what you are pulling on or what is keeping you from pulling the intake free is a doosie.

4. before you can freely pull the IM off (or pull it to the side like I did), you will need to unhook a boatload of connectors. Do yourself a favor and label each one with a piece of tape and take lots of pictures.

5. do not pull on the IM too hard, or you will break an electrical connector that fits into the block just below the starter (I'm guessing either engine temp, or oil level)

6. I've been working on cars for 20+ years, but I have never seen a starter mounted like the 330i. Holy smokes is it difficult to get to. It took me 5 hours to pull the starter, and 5 more to put it back in.

My starter died and was hoping to replace it myself if possible...

So, do the starter bolts have to be replaced on the n54? (Im about to be one of the newest members of the starter fubar list)

Page 12 (from the PDF in http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=744787 ) indicates there would be corrosion issues if aluminum bolts were not used, but the n54 block is not magnesium, its aluminum. So can't just regular bolts be used? I imagine the factory ones will likely break (if they are aluminum) when being removed so they will probably at least need new ones...

I'm halfway through disassembly on my 2007 328i and I can't get the electrical connection to come off the throttle body and I don't wanna break it. It's got the smallest little clips I've ever seen and there's no place to squeeze that I can see.

Anyone else who has done this have any advice?

A little flat poin from a electronics tool kit should be able to get it to lift over the tab.

It's got the smallest little clips I've ever seen and there's no place to squeeze that I can see. Anyone else who has done this have any advice? TIA, Rob
