streaming iphone music through car
Chaps
Just got myself an iphone, never had one before and want to know the best way to stream music from it to the cars' speakers. It has a jack in the armrest that I can connect it to, but that means a cable trailing out the armrest. Any ideas/experience. Costs - I'd like to keep it below £200, I'm not going to do a CIC retrofit or anything! Car is a single humper '57 plate. |

If you don't have hands free fit a parrot mki9200 phone kit. You can charge the phone and use the leads to play the music or you can play the music through it via blue tooth which is what your after.

I'm not sure mate. Never had Bluetooth. But I did have the above fitted to my last e90.

I've got a pad from firebox that sits on top of the ash tray. When I put my phone on it it sticks and doesn't budge.
Then, I have the cable connected in the arm rest which trails out by the side of the seat and is then tucked under the trim all the way down to the ash tray area. It's not the neatest solution but looks OK. I don't use it much though as I have USB. In your situation I'd probably get a Bluetooth receiver connected to the 3.5mm jack , either battery powered or one that can be powered by the socket in the armrest and the play music over Bluetooth.

You can try the belkin air cast auto. It connects to phone via Bluetooth and has an audio jack that goes into the aux. you can leave the receiver tucked away or have it out as you can use it as a bluetooth phone through the aux radio setting. Works with i-phone voice commands.
Make sure it's the air cast auto as there is another version which is non Bluetooth. Think it cost around £35. |

You can get that but you won't be able to use the steering wheel controls
I don't have USB or iPhone adaptor but just burn data discs which will play in the CD player - I can get well over 100 songs and can split them into folders (different genres/playlists), all of which are displayed and selectable through iDrive - works seamlessly and costs no more than the price of a cd |

The device I mentioned above has arrived this morning and I am delighted with it. I have an iPhone and I can stream music and any sound output from my phone to the blue tooth gadget that's plugged into the aux slot in centre console. I switched to aux in the entertainment options on the idrive and hey presto. I can use the steering wheel volume buttons no problem. The BT connection to the phone also has a connection to the system so when a call comes in or you make one it cuts out the aux/BT/iPod connection automatically
So it does work and is a good option for systems that don't have the USB port. I am v pleased as this was one function that I have been used to. |

I guess you pair this up to your iPhone via Bluetooth.....but what happens when a call comes through?
Does it automatically switch to the cars Bluetooth stem allowing the use of the steering wheel controls? If it still stays paired to the cars BT, then that's a great solution to USB and auz wires trailing through the car! |

This is what I use and it works great. I've got the receiver next to the ashtray so I have the thin wire coming down the inside of the armrest and tucked on the underside of the centre console popping out at the other end. |

I'm a bit miffed with that, was just on the verge of getting a cradle for my 4S. I've got the professional radio in my 10 plate pre-LCI but no iDrive. Might get it anyway though. I saw on another (older) thread it was possible to burn MP3 CDs for use on the Pro system, which I was doing 10 years ago on the Pioneer HU I had in my Porsche 928!

So I've tested it. It does work perfectly. I can make calls from the steering wheel and voice control. I can stream my music and other iPhone sounds via BT and the aux input. Then someone calls, the communication system kicks in, fades the aux sound out and then you've got control of the call via the steering wheel. You end the call and the aux input is back again.
The belkin one looks to do exactly the same plus it's powered. The one I have is very very small and is charged by a USB charger. Not sure how long it plays for.. Early days. Tarby |
