downpipe rattle

Installed my VRSF downpipes a couple weeks ago and now I've been noticing a rattle.

It's definitely not a waste gate rattle because it only happens when I hit a bump or drive over some of those painted lines.

The sound seems like its coming right below the center console from inside the car, I took the plastic cover thing off the bottom and inspected the downpipes and noticed that they we're very close together where they attach to the exhaust.

Not sure how to fix the rattle or if the sound is even coming from there. I've noticed there is also several other spots that could be causing this noise.

Anyone have experience with their downpipes rattling? Looking for some help here.

It could be the DP rattling against the heat shield. I would reccomend getting back under there, bending the heat shield away a little, and attempt to reposition the DP a little

I have VRSF DPs and we the fitment on the one closer to the trans was a PITA. Basically needed 3 people to install that one w/o having any rubbing: 2 people held the DP in place while the other 1 bolted it all together. Huge headache, but the mech said these were nothing compared to the frustration he got w/ Fabspeed's. ARs & Macht Schnell he said might as well bes old by BMW -- Perfect fit.

idk about all that. the vrsf is no better no worse than ar or any one else.

its just that installing any downpipes, skews the viewpoint, when its difficult every downpipe is shitty quality lol.

^^This is true... A shitty install changes peoples opinion very quickly. In the end it worked out really well, there was plenty of space between the DPs + heatshield/trans. Car sounds phenomenal now, just wish it wasn't misfiring so I could actually drive it

Wonder if thisis the rattle I have?? I really don't think it is Wastegate rattle. It only happend on light acceleration, from 2,500 to 3,000. Doesn't happen at idle or deceleration. I have AR kittyless pipes that fit perfect. I am thinking maybe the heat shield on the brakes have a rock in it.

On the stock DPs, there's a hanger where the DPs bolt on to, but the hanger isn't welded on the DPs. Using aftermarket DPs can get very close to this hanger so what I did was bend it to have more clearance.

Running COBB Stage 2+FMIC Sport, I got:
  • P0302 - Cylinder 2 Misfire
  • PO301 - Cylinder 1 Misfire
  • PO300 - Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfires
  • P2C7F - Lambda Probe after catalytic converter 2, trimming control
  • P29CE - Misfire, Cylinder 2
  • P29CD - Misfire, Cylinder 1
  • P29CC - Misfire, more cylinders
  • P2C31 - Lambda probe
Switched to Stage 0, I only got:
  • P2C7F - Lambda Probe after catalytic converter 2, trimming control
  • P2C6A - Lambda Probe after catalytic reversed

Taking the car to Bimmer Clinic in Elizabeth Wednesday morning -- Hopefully between spark plugs & a broken o2 sensor it'll be problem free Wednesday afternoon

why does this sound more like a damage of the o2 sensor from a bad downpipe install? granted i got that lambda code and when i changed the coil it went away.

im guessing also, that this might be injectors?

tell me what they say. ps, they are the one on rt9?

Took the car out to a friend whos a BMW mechanic, think he just installed the sensor backwards (I'm getting lots of lambda, running rich codes). I bought plugs just in case but I'll let you know how it goes/what Bimmer Clinic is like. Hopefully I'll be in a lot better mood after they get their hands on the car.

I had issues with my ar designs DP. After a few hundred KM's, ended up putting the car back on the hoist, loosening the one flange and repositioning it.

I had it rattling on a chunk of the transmission. We now have a good quarter inch or so of clearance. If it's an issue again, we'll be grinding down that part of the tranny.

Were you getting misfires too?? Or just the emissions codes?? I'm wondering if the sensors being installed backwards (or if they're broken) are triggering a "false-positive" and inducing the misfires, or if my spark plugs/ignition coils/fuel injectors actually need to replaced.

I'll let you know how it goes tomorrow (hopefully not an expensive repair).

Would this happen at a certain Rpm?

checked the downpipes yesterday and one of the clamps that hold the down pipe to the turbo was SUPER loose. I tightened it all the way with a little too much ease. I'm thinking the clamp may have broken and the down pipe is coming loose. Will investigate more this weekend.
