Garage List
Really? 5w30. Open hood. Look at oil fil cap...it'll tell you Castrol recommended. It should also say full synthetic somewhere under the hood. Or maybe even in the owners manual

Adding oil or changing oil? Honestly... it's a pretty heated debate if you're talking about chainging it.

Castrol Edge Euro Formula 0w-30 and Mobil 1 0w-40 full synth are the two front-runners and on average, you'll find the perform very similarly to each other (if doing a full change)

If you're just adding oil (topping off), the only important factor to consider is that the oil MUST BE LL-01 approved. This can be difficult to find in gas stations, however...

I know that it probably seems trivial and probably is in a lot of scenarios, however, you have a 335 which runs the oil quite a bit hotter than other engines (uses it as a coolant for the turbos), and for my $$, I'd stick with what they recommend.

First off, this post is in the wrong section. Second, Forum rules suggest doing a search on topics before actually asking a question. So, maybe a look at the Mechanical Maintenance... (Oil & Fluids) section and seeing the 1st sticky "Oil Change - what oil to use" might have answered the OP's question...

Also your suggestion of Mobil 1 5w30 is wrong. M1 5w30 is not BMW LL-01 approved, only 0w40 is. Before you chastise others for getting irritated at those who don't search for an answer that is located in the damn owners manual AND on BMW's website, and try to give the answer to the question, make sure it's the right one.

Yea, M1 0w40 is what I meant to say because someone had already answered me that very same question a few weeks ago. My bad for my mistake.

That's the wrong Syntec. It's not thick enough (the 0W30 Euro formula is thicker, consult the PDS) and neither ACEA A3 or LL-01 rated. For just about the same price, get the 0W30 next time.

LL-04 is specifically *NOT* recommended for use in gasoline engines in North America - only diesels. LL-04 is a low SAPS oil and cannot handle the fuel dilution we see in DI cars with North American tune. In NA, NOx pollution requirements mandate that DI cars be tuned to run too rich, thus contaminating the engine oil with fuel.

Use an LL-01 (or in a pinch, just ACEA A3) rated 30 or 40 weight.

They don't. They use a 5W30 specially blended for them by Castrol. It's not Syntec, just because it's made by Castrol.

BMW 5W30 does meet ACEA A3 and LL-01, and is thicker than most 5W30s on the market.

OP, can't you purchase a couple of quarts of BMW 5w30 Synthetic from your dealer? Or you can order it online from Tischer (getBMWparts).

Run to United and buy BMW 5w30. All the new M engines use this oil. It's cheap to!

All the old ones used it too, until the E46 M3 started spinning rod bearings and they changed the official spec to TWS 10W60 for the entire M line up. I guess the "marketing statute of limitations" ran out and they're back to specing 5W30 for everything again.

They also spec 20,000km+ oil change intervals and "lifetime" driveline fluids. I don't believe everything BMW says without question.
