Possible Future 335i Owner
Hello everyone, I am in the process of searching for a 335i (preferably coupe), but I came across several issues that I am unfamiliar of and would like for someone to clarify before I make the purchase.
Has the HPFP been addressed and fixed yet? Any other major problem(s)? I come from the Lexus community and want something on the performance end. There wasn't any problem with my Lexus whatsoever, so I want something reliable too as I would be commuting too. Here's some recent pics of my car before I go back to stock: Thanks |

Nice IS. I could never drive a car like that. Why?.........because I would scratch that front bumper on all sorts of curbs. I just can't seem to avoid them haha. Props for keeping it in such great condition.
For the 335i, yes, I think the HPFP issue has been fixed. If you are looking to get a new 2012 model, then I think it is even less of an issue since it's a different engine (N55 vs N54). Unless you get the 335is coupe which is N54. But even then it should be fixed. I think the last model to have problems was 2009/2010. I have heard there are two: One issue with the gasket on the transmission that needs replacement. Another is a problem with the shifter knob when switching between regular drive and sport drive modes. Eventually it won't engage between modes properly. Do some searches here. BUT, it appears most of these issues happen on older models (i.e. 2007, 2008). I don't know but I got the extended warranty just in case. |

Thanks for all the compliments!
The Wildcard- Great info, I was fairly worry about the HPFP issue since it could cause possible breakdown suddenly. Don't want that to happen when I'm commuting. |

I do believe the HPFP issue has been resolved. That said, if you go used from 2008-2010(?), make sure to get the 10 year/120,000 miles warranty (pump) in writing. Nowadays, the HPFP is made from a different supplier.

You looking at new or used? I assume used if reliability is a concern of yours. Not that I like to state the obvious, but a 335 is not likely to ever be as reliable as a Lexus. As for the hpfp issue. Seems to be a resolved. I was under the impression that the extended warranty ifor the hpfp is VIN dependent, and any car 2010 and prior is automatically covered. Spend some time perusing the forums. There are a number of trend mechanical issues that come up. Wastegate rattle and some turbo issues are not prolific, but not uncommon either. I've read a number of posts about valve chatter/noisy lifters and I think some fuel injector issues too.
My car has not left me stranded over the 42,000 miles that i've owned it. I bought new though. The hpfp died at 4,800 miles but has been fine since then. I believe the hpfp was recalled/replaced with a long-term hpfp solution in 2010 in all affected models. Very nice looking IS. I was shopping for them before I puchased my 335, but the driving dynamics just weren't quite there...mostly in the steering feel department. Good luck! |

nice 350!
imo, if you keep it stock, i dont see many problem with it. New HPFP has been pretty good to us lately. this forum use to be riddin with HPFP failures, but i after the recalls, i havent seen many failures yet!. if your worried about reliability. id just get a CPO 335i. you might not be able to go FBO being that Downpipes and intercooler might not be the easiest thing to take off and reinstall after service. I love tune and intake. Still very quick and can be ready for service in less then 1/2 an hour. But be warned, once tuned, things can get finicky, as in your car will eventually get a misfire. Though it can be solved easily its just a headache! IMO ALL WORTH IT. |
