Oil leak at head (gasket)?

Hiya,

I was cleaning the engine today, and I noticed some brown stuff on the part circled below (the metal "pan" sort of thing):

(unfortunately, I didn't manage to snap any actual pics)

After cleaning, I can't see any oil around the head bolts. It's a hard to reach location, and I doubt my cleaner would be that strong to remove it all without any mechanical help...

Also, I checked parts near the circled silver part, they're clean...

There was an oil leak around the filler cap though, cap was partly greasy (approx. half, the same half of car as the silver part) maybe it's seeping through, under the engine cover? Or could it be a head gasket leak? What do I do about the oil cap leaking?

Car is almost 3 years old, approx 20K miles.

I have to top up 1L somewhere around 12 - 14 k KM.

Any help appreciated

Might be a oil filter housing leak. Dying driving the oil naturally goes back and lower. Mine had this leak.

Valve cover gasket. I had oil in the same spot, just got mine replaced.

Pull out your coils and see if there is any oil on the tips or in the spark plug well.

Thanks, is there a DIY for this?

Also, how soon can I expect the oil to be back in the "pan"? After cleaning I mean... today I drove the car for like 20 KM, oil cap and pan are clean...

I'm not sure if there is a DIY, but I know it is kind of a pain in the ass. I'm not sure I understand your question.

Tech could have spilled oil when filling and didn't take the time to clean it up. Pull the cover and clean it well. Then keep an eye on it to see if it leaks. If so, take it in and have the dealer replace gaskets.

Ok, one more question:

is there any risk leaving the gasket as is? I mean, provided that the car isn't drinking oil like crazy (First top up at 10 000 Km - added 1L, oil changed at 12 000, oil changed at 18000, right now oil indicator shows about 1/4 above minimum).

The dealer network/service isn't very good here, I go to Germany to have my service done... I will be able to do that in like a month or two at the soonest, so is there any risk putting it off till then?

I'm guessing it's no problem putting it off, provided that the oil leakage is minimal (i'm guessing it could have been less than 100ml over the 10k kilometers I have driven during the last oil change).

Also, provided that I do get the gasket changed, can I be certain that there will be no oil leak (provided it was done correctly)? I read that since our engines are tilted, they tend to leak (a bit)

Thanks

Iv burned oil under normal circumstances, so I dont think you are in to much trouble if you wait a couple weeks

Drove 100km today, two spots of oil on the pan... keeping an eye on it, but it does look like the valvecover gasket will need replacing...

How long did the car have to stay at the service? Is it manageable in one day?

Yes, 1/2 day job.
