How long does it take to install dp's?

Hi guys, I've got raceland dp and I called a repair shop an they said it would cost me $600 for installment if it gets complicated and $100-200 if there's no problems or other modifications needed to fit them. He said he has never done downpipes on a BMW before and he said it might take him 8hours!!!! I have a 08 335i coupe.

a good shop should take ~2 hours... you can DIY in ~3-4 hours...

I recommend a shop that HAS experience doing DPs...

Took me 7hrs by myself on jack stands. It would have been quicker with a lift and a stubby 7/8 wrench to get the 02 sensors off. Definitely sucked, but really not that bad. I would do it again to save myself the $400 I was quoted to do them.

Took me 5-6 on jack stands. It's all about the right tools, as seems to be the case with everything on this car. The stubby wrenches (12 and 13mm i think) are very useful as is an O2 sensor wrench.

Experienced guys can do it in 1 hour.

DIY FTW!!!! Took me about the same about of time and it was well worth it. Why pay someone for something you can do?

yeah DIY, Pain in the ASS YES but well worth doing yourself, my dad owns an auto shop could've had a mechanic do it for me but wanted it done my self..so i did it after hours at the shop from 8pm till about 2am but enjoyed the drive back home

but yeah $600 is ridiculous, and if you think you can do it without moving the steering rack... you must have tiny hands and arms...

Took me about 5 hours with a lift. This is also taking into account of letting the car cool down and BSing around. If you have a friend with small hands, now it would be a good time to bribe him!

6 hrs in my garage on jack stands taking my time. Could do it in 3.5 now probably.

I was quoted $220 by my local shop.

Quite the range...

$100-200 = steal/fair
$600 = outrageous

Takes me about about 2 hours on average. I have done it in an hour though lol. My advice, find a shop who has done it that way you aren't raped on labor.

$600 is absurd. I paid $120 to have mine installed.

Find a shop that is experienced with BMW mods.

My buddy is 6' 130 and he can do it without moving the rack. So yes you need skinny girly arms to do it that way.

It took me about 7 hours on jack stands. I think I could do it in about 2.5-3 hours now.

Like every1s said jack up the car, find some1 who'd let you borrow some front wheel ramps or a shop that's done this kinda work before.

For $600, you could prob take it to a BMW dealer & pay one of their service guys for labor + hush money for the install.

Appreciate the comment guys!, yeah I heard they are a pain in the a** to install, and I wish I had the experience to do it myself and don't want to mess anything up on my car. I just ordered new gaskets/bolts and I'm taking to the shop that hasn't done dp's before and if they charge me $600, im going to gtfo the shop, return the dp's, and just get fmic!

This is only my personal perspective, but figure out what your time is worth. I'm pretty sure anyone on this forum could install dp's but not all of us want to deal with the headache. (Count me as one who doesn't want to deal with the headache.)

If something is going to take me longer than an hour to an hour and a half, I'm paying someone to do it for me.

It took my buddy an hour and a half to install mine. It was the first set he's done. I would've done it myself, but he had a lift and every tool you could possibly need and only charged me $65.
