Removing the rear turbo manifold and downpipe question

Anybody has an idea how time consuming this will be ? I got the parts now to install a k-type thermocouple in the rear turbo manifold ( between cylinder #5 and #6 ) to measure EGT and a wideband O2 sensor in the downpipe ( pre-cat ). The data will be logged with the Innovate Motorsports DL-32 device.

Appreciate your feedback.

Thanks, Eugen.

Sounds like a hassle to me. I'm using the Innovate tailpipe adaptor for tuning and its working pretty well. When you're done you throw it in the garage where it belongs.

I'd prefer to have it installed permanently. The system is scalable, a IAT sensor will be next. I like to know the data in different driving environments and conditions.

Are exhaust shop's capable to do this on a 335i ?

Yes, it's probably ~4 book hours to R&R the downpipes.

I do have to ask, if you can't change anything, why scan? What will you be looking for? Why not scan the IAT in the ODBII system?

I can an did change already, like you did.

I like and need to know data:

Stock
Procede v1
Procede v2
Intercooler
Water / methanol injection

accurate, single and combined.

So you think to remove everything, drill the holes, weld on the bungs and put everything back again using new gaskets should be doable within ~ 6 hours ? Would be ok. Sorry for the question again, who should do the job: Any shop ( something like your great custom exhaust shops does not exist in Switzerland ) or better the dealership ?

I think 6 hours sounds pretty reasonable.... I got the rear turbo on the 535 out in 2-3 hours..

Why? They do looks fairly easy with all the nice v-band clamping.

Theres not a way to tape into the DME to get the afr readings? the stock o2 sensor already is a wideband sensor.

Not sure. Anyway, the challenge seems to be the EGT sensor install, it would not be too difficult to install the wideband. In addition the wideband is supported from the data logger ( Innovate Motorsports DL-32 & LC-1 ), so the readings will be accurate.

There is, but you need to read it through a laptop and do a little conversion. The problem is with a procede the readings will be inaccurate.

Update: Found a BMW dealership in Austria ( I'm there on a regular basis ), willing to do the installation for ~ $600. This is fine with me. When they will have time to do it in about 2-3 weeks. I'll give you an update what EGT temp's / AFR ratios I read with and without PROcede.

FYI.

Cheers
Eugen

What is the point of wasting money on doing this?

I really don't understand what type of car you think a 335i with PROcede is. These are chipped, stock turbo 6-cylinder 330whp cars, not 800 whp big turbo radical cars. I'm sure Shiv checked everything out when he put together his PROcede tune, and, once you see the EGT gauge one time, its gonna give you the same reading (within certain constraints) everytime you look at the gauge.

Wait, hold on. Is this the fastest car you have ever had?

I just like to know what I do to the car when I put on performance related mod's. The PROcede will not be the last one. For you it's wasted money, for me it's what I like to do. And yes, it's the second fast car I have and the best one I've ever had
