Everyone's Gas Mileage is taking a dive

I just stopped by the local dealership and was interested to see the 535is are out (as in the new body style that looks just like the old one). On the window stickers are the newly revised EPA fuel mileage numbers, which are supposed to take into account the way folks actually drive in 2007 (vs in the 80s or whenever the old number system was calculated).

So the numbers take a significant dive. The 535i is now rated at 17/26 city/Highway and the 528i (which used to be 20/30 I believe) is now just 17/27. The 550i step is now 15/23 vs. 17/25, but even at that new low number did not incur a gas guzzler tax. They must have lowered the number for gas guzzlers, too.

The new numbers only affect 08s, so the 335is still show the same numbers as before.

So anyone getting an 08 335i, don't be surprised to see 17/26 on the window vs. 19/28 or 19/29 that we see now. Everything is the same, just new EPA recipe being used.

I drive 30,000 miles per year. I'd rather spend $5K per year on gas instead of $10K per year. Maybe you don't think $5k is a lot of money, but I do (it nearly equals the lease payments on a 335i).

The point is that gas mileage has NOT gone down, just the EPA ratings have decreased due to their new calculations.

Huh? Where can you get a 30K/yr lease payment for a 335i that is around $5K or even 10K?

No, they are just going to put on the sticker what people have been getting all along and we have known.

I was making the point that $5K per year will almost lease you a 335i (but not for 30K miles necessarily). A 15K per year lease for 3 years costs about $500 per month or $6K per year.

Personally I'd like to have my cake (lots of HP flavored) and eat it too (not pay ridiculous amounts at the pump.

The 335i is one of the best cars from an efficiency and HP standpoint, esp with PROcede!

Funny to mention the Prius since it is going to be taking the largest hit as far as the new EPA ratings go. From 60 city/52 hwy to around 48 city/45 hwy.

Here is the link to see the numbers for a 335i http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/calcu...umn=1&id=23523

You can calculate the new number for any car. For me the new number is pretty much what I get in real life. I.e combined of 21 mpg

You can't just dismiss fuel economy. It's not just about your money, it's about the health and welfare of the environment and people around you. It's selfish to think that fuel economy is just about how much you're throwing away at the pump. I'm not a believer in the media-induced global warming scare, though the earth's mean temperature is actually fluctuating, but wouldn't it be nice to have cleaner air and less respiratory issues? I live in LA and the port and cities just do a toll on the atmosphere around here.

I think the N54's fuel consumption rates are decent for its output/size. But performance cars arent meant to be dollar saving mileage queens, we have hybrids for that. Though, I must say that cars like the 335 and the 997 porsche turbo are taking great steps towards acheiving more efficient performance engines

As long as I'm getting at least 20MPH I'm happy. G35's on the other hand gets the both of the bad sides. The not so quick acceleration and not so great mileage. My friend is averaging about 17-18 on his auto G35.
