What type of oli do you use in your 335i?

Hi guys,

I need to add a litre of oil to my 335i.

The manual only says to use BMW long-life. I am guessing this will just be a re-badged off-the shelf product with a 300% mark-up.

Does anyone know what type of oil I can use?

Cheers.

Castrol and Mobil1 each make an LL-01 oil. I think BMW LL-01 is made by Castrol.

Motul makes a BMW-LL specific oil.

Also Motul's 8100 line is BMW-LL approved.

AmsOil is really good stuff too, but I dont know if they have anything that's BMW-LL approved. Otherwise any full synthetic should be fine. If you want the best, stick to synthetics with ester. Stay away from full race oils, they will provide the best lubrication, but will break down too quickly.

IMO, Mobil1 isn't that good anymore since they revised the formula, the green bottle Castrol is good stuff, but we cant get here in the US. Since your in Australia you should have better luck. Stay away from Royal Purple. Motul 8100 or AmsOil are the best IMO. Of course everyone has their preference..

Yeah I've seen those Royal Purple adds too..

Here's a good test, it is motorcycle oil, but for our purposes it doesn't matter. Also, disregard the 50w testing as it wont be used in our motors. The 40w testing should give you a pretty clear idea of well various oil compare. HT/HS and 4-ball wear test are probly the most important tests. Also happens to be where Royal Purple fails..

I only use BMW oil, it's actually cheaper than what I see in the stores at under $5/gal.

Does it say LL-01/ LL-04 on it? Probably does I just can't see it. Either way I think you're fine. AFAIK, from a thread E90Fleet posted in, BMW's is just relabeled Castrol 5w-30 which isn't found in stores in the USA (I haven't found it).

Castrol Edge is supposed to be one the best ever created, along with Shell Helix and Motul 300v

Used Mobil1 0W-40 for the first time yesterday for "break in" oil change at 1500 miles. It dropped oil temp 10-12 degrees below where it was before during normal operating conditions.
