Anybody here actually love what they do for a living?

I think some of the responses in the losing my mind with the 9-5 thread is a microcosm of a lot of people's lives. They hate their job, but they tolerate it because it pays the bills and allows them to have fun. I feel it's like a prison though. We spend half our lives working right so shouldn't we enjoy it? I was reading the celebrity graduation speeches article on yahoo and the last one with Steve Jobs really got to me, especially now that he died.

http://news.stanford.edu/news/2005/j...bs-061505.html

He loved what he did and so do people like Trump, Buffet, Cuban. Maybe they're right. Maybe they're on to something. I googled how to find what you love to do and found this

http://briankim.net/blog/2006/07/how...ou-love-to-do/

Did the exercises and got the book to be sure and now I have a couple ideas for a business I want to open but the way the economy is going, I'm not so sure it's the right move. Does anybody here live like Jobs and Buffet and do what they love for a living and get paid enough to buy what you want in life? Or is that only reserved for a handful of people?...Guess I'm going through an early mid life crisis. I can't be the only one that dreams of something better right?

Edit: Forgot the important most important thing xD! Op, if you have a dream go for it! I don't think age should limit what you want to do in life.

I can't completely answer your question, but I can provide my input.

Since I'm in college, I see people whining all the time! Personally, I love computer science and thats why I chose it to be my major. I have friends who constantly whine daily about their major and classes. The worst are people who are studying medicine! The majority of them want to get into the field of medicine because the big $$$ that can come out. My gf is studying medicine because she enjoys it, but some of her friends piss the nerve out of me. They constantly whine and cry! If you don't like it don't do it!

Another Example:
Friend "Dood next semester is gonna suck I have to take like 4 business classes".
Me: "wtf aren't you a business major??"
Me: "I'm actually looking forward to my classes o_0".

Of course, not everyone enjoys every single class offered which is fine since you go your own way after college.

Personally, I have always wanted to invent something amazing that can help out society. Things like google glasses I have always found to be amazing.

One of my current propositions(in my mind) would be to extend the headsup display a car has so it goes throughout the entire windshield. The applications of that would be awesome. Advanced gadgets have always been my interest.

I have a vivid imagination, and ideas are always popping in my head. I think I contribute this to my childhood. My parents always told me to study what I enjoyed and they were right. I grew up in the nintendo/N64/playstation era. Seeing the first 3d mario game was amazing to me and always fun.

A lot of people use to frown on things like game programming, but those people actually get paid quite well now(~100k)!

My belief is if you do something you enjoy, then the money will come naturally. If you notice, many successful products we use today come out because someone is passionate about what they do.

Another I could think of is the guys from **********s. I think I read that it originally started with two guys who enjoyed cars, and look where it is now! They did it themselves out of what they like.

The point of life was never to enjoy it. It was to have eat, grow up, have sex, make babies, and die. Rinse and repeat. Humans are weird animals in that we built up our own environment without us. Each of us takes a role within that environment to create a functioning society. As a result, we have free time (which other animals that are constantly grazing or hunting to survive do not have) because we have created a more efficient system of living. Instead of doing the various tasks we need for survival individually (hunt for yourself/tribe, make skins for yourself/tribe, build shelter for yourself/tribe, search for water for yourself/tribe, etc), we each contribute one small task (of varying importance) to society and everyone else.

Whether or not you end up doing something for "the system" that you enjoy doing is partly up to you with career choice, and partly not up to you because it depends on the job markets and what jobs are in demand and needed. In a sense, yes, everybody is a slave to society. We have built a system that we cannot escape because to abandon it would lead to chaos and anarchy. However, because of this efficient system we finally have free time to do things which we actually enjoy. If you find a job you love, then good for you, because you're probably in the minority. Hell, if you find a job you tolerate, then good for you, because at least you don't hate it.

It has much to do with temperament. Some people are chronically happy, some are not, some are in between. Kind of a "grass is greener argument" If you get into a field you know your not going to like, dont expect a different result. Anything else and your doing something right.

I like this post because you provide the "real world" of it. There are things that aren't up to us so that can put a kink in our plans. Didn't Aristotle say one needs blessings and virtue? You can have virtue, but if you don't have blessings of things outside your control, you're limited.

I actually noticed this a lot. I know a guy who owns a painting business and another one that owns a pest control business. They seem like the happiest people I know. Nobody I know who has a job seems particularly happy...

I was pretty unhappy with the job I had. It was too little in the direction I wanted to go and the money wasn't that great.

So with the love and support of my wife (we had no spare money, she was pregnant with our first child) I decided I had to change that before our son is born, because otherwise I probably would never do it.

This was 4 months ago. Now I have a small business I love (with two of my best friends - the atmosphere at our "office" (it's one room in one of the friends flat) is great). I earn the money I would never even imagine. And I have a two-weeks-old healthy son.

This was the best decision I have ever made - for me, and my familiy.

So basically I don't feel I have the moral right to say OP what you should do, but it worked perfectly for me. I am so happy and thankful every time I think about it.

btw. I'm 26 and a graphic designer.

Fucking hate it, but my passion didn't really hit me until I was a few months out from graduating, so I said fuck it, I'll get this degree and give it a shot. I've given it a fair shot (18 months) and I'm going back to school in the fall to pursue a new degree/career path. Life is too short to trade time for money. I need to enjoy what I'm doing to excel and it's just not happening right now.

You'll hear people say "dream jobs don't exist" or "you'll have to settle with something, not everyone loves their job" but I don't buy that for a minute. Just because they rolled over and settled doesn't mean everyone else should. Life is what you make of it.

The small business idea is 100% correct. Long story short, i worked for my small family business. Everything was great. Great hours, great pay etc. everything I wanted out of work. A few years in our largest client decides they want to take what we do for them in house. I had no option but to go with them, sure I could have job hunted but this was at least a job a knew would pay, took a 25k pay cut though.

I now 100% hate my job. I have a manger that knows less about my job than I do, which is typically common with managers but Jesus this is bad. I took a huge pay cut and get shit on almost daily. I've been searching for a new job but with no luck. I would have to do a complete career change for a new job at this point. Biggest road blocks are wife and i have a 2 week trip to Europe booked in the fall and plan to try to have a kid afterwards. Don't know how much I want to rock the boat currently. We are 2 years from paying off our house. Thinking of waiting till the as to not financially harm us.

I love what I do , but I have to do it 7 days a week. i'm afraid if I let someone else do it for me they won't do a good job.. The only drawback is that I don't have time to spend with my wife and 2 kids. I work and she spends the money. I have a convenience store..
