Hitting yourself in the face

Yeah i know its not a new topic but.... I installed a ZHP 6MT shift knob on my car Fri night. I was pulling on my stock shifter - giving it everything I had and that sucker jumped off in a ms and I hit my face with it!! It did some damage!! I searched and a few said that can happen but I didn't think it really would. Word of warning.... IT WILL!

I remember reading here that someone gave themselves a black eye trying to pry that thing off.

It would have been a black eye, but that thing caught me dead square on the bridge of my nose and opened it up. Needless to say I felt pretty stupid......

I installed a ZHP shifter probably 6 months ago and after reading the how-to's and all the warnings on being careful not to coldcock yourself in the face, I figured out a pretty easy way to pull the knob off.

Just put your front two seats forward all the way, open your sunroof, hop in the car (take your shoes off of course), reach down and grab the knob (once you've lifted the leather boot from the console), use the sunroof opening to brace yourself, and PULL UP. I found putting it in 4th gear provides the best angle.

You'll never have to worry about damage while using a screwdriver as a fulcrum, or punching the headliner or your face again.

^ Did it a similar way. Straddled the center console, put my head out the sunroof and slowly pulled up. Slow steady tugs, no quick jerky movements (yes this sounds dirty). I tried a few times just sitting in passenger seat and pulling up but its tough to get good leverage.

I'm just leaving the stock shifter on. I actually really like it. And black eye not required.

That pic made me laugh! Looks like you get to chose between a black eye, a bloody nose or racking yourself in the nuts

One of the very first thing's I did when I started at BMW in the shop was to quickly install an M shifter on a E90. Man oh man did I learn my lesson

Another solution is to place a pillow between you and the knob when pulling.
