I have Style 161, tire place recommended something strange...

I am running 225's all around. The tire place recommended that I get some 245/40R17 tires for the Style 161 wheels. I am pretty sure these wouldn't fit, but he says that would be within the tolerance allowed for those wheels. I don't know, though.

Basically, I need new tires, and I think I don't want to go with all seasons. I've heard much better stories from people who have separate summer and winter tires.

The recommendations I have for 225/45R17:

Continental DW
BFGComp2
Toyo Proxes T1R
Hankook V12

The sidewall will be a little bit thinner than the oem tire size, but it's not much of a difference. Depending on the width of the wheel, the edges of the tires might "balloon" out past the edge of the wheel (if the tire is too wide for the wheel) but that's pretty much it.

If you have style 161's, why not run a proper staggered stetup? 225/45r17 front and 255/40r17 rear (oem spec)

I have AWD, and would also lose the ability to rotate tires.

on my sport package 328i with 161s, I have front 225 on 8in rims and back 255 on 8.5in rims. This is the factory setup for tire width given the rim width. How wide are your rims? square set up?

Just get the same 225/45/17 like you've got now if you're happy with that.

So there's no real preference to brand?

Sure there is; it just depends on how much you want to spend, what kind of tire life you expect, and how much road noise you can tolerate.

If you want to spend less, go with the Hankook V12; it's not the highest rated tire in it's class, but from what I've read it's a great "middle of the road" summer tire and you can't beat the price: $340 for all four from TireRack!

If price isn't an issue go with the Michelin Pilot Super Sport. For your intentions, you probably won't be able to find a better tire than that.

I would have recommended you check out the Conti DW, Birdgestone S-04, etc. as well, but since those cost north of ~$550 anyway, you'll probably be better off just spending a bit more for the Michelin's as I'm sure those will be a much better tire in the long run.

Just my $0.02...

What's the road life of a Michelin Pilot Super Sport, vs. the Hankooks? If they last much longer, then I could definitely see it being worth the extra money.

I have the bridgestone s04s and they fit the 255/40 17 rear wheels exactly. Been very happy with them.

I think I'll go with the Hankook V12. I have Hankooks on the other car and have been consistently pleased. Also, I can't really beat the price, and I'm not looking for ultimate performance. I'm barely enough of a performance driver to justify improving cornering performance that much.

Now, straight line performance, that's another story, considering that doesn't take much skill
