is it POSSIBLE to add paddles to the 335xi step?

saw a few threads and just thought it would be cool to do... wonder how expensive it would be and if it would be worth it?

here is one of the threads...

http://www.tayam.net/x5/smgwheelonx5.htm

also looks like these guys are working on something like what I'm talking about for the e90

Having no technological knowledge on the subject:

I would assume there is not much different from the 335i steering wheel and electronics to a 335xi. I mean, what difference could there be? If they are the same, a swap or install should be pretty straightforward.

I was told by the dealer when i picked mine up that the paddles may come on future 335xi's, until then they are not a sports package item - but it is possible to add them at any time.

Me too.? i would love to have paddles..

i was considering the lexus is250 over the 328i back when i was car shopping. and honestly on of the few advantages the lexus had over the 328 was the paddles. they're awesome.

Subject to further verification but from what info I was able to gather if you have or made steering wheel with paddle shifters it is a simple swap on 335Xi. It seems that we did not get them installed as part of sport package only because BMW had a shortage on parts. Should be as simple as buying right parts when available or adding a switch (connectors should be already pre-wired) with make up paddles. There is some more info here http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...35&hg=32&fg=35

You can retro-fit paddles. I am in the process of doing it now.

You need to order the paddle "bits" and a new steering wheel. (The BMW service team tried fitting the paddles to my exisiting wheel but could not make them fit) So I have to buy the wheel as well.

Cheers.

I have not been told about a new airbag so I am sure the original one would be utilised.

The cost:

As a guide the paddle option on a new 335 in Australia is $200.

As a retrofit, the dealer wanted about $650 for the paddle parts, $680 for the new wheel and about $450 in labour. Ouch.

I will let you know everything once I get it installed. I am waiting for the salesman to come back to me. He said he would look into doing a better deal on price. I should be seeing him tomorrow.

Cheers.

anxiously awaiting your results.... I think the best bet would be to find a wrecked car with paddles and purchase the parts required...

I'm awaiting your results as well. My dealership said I'd also need a trim piece for the wheel and the wheel buttons (they're apparently different in their electronics). So four things needed in total: 1. new wheel, 2. wheel buttons, 3. trim bezel for wheel and 4. paddle shifters themselves.

They weren't able to tell me conclusively whether the electronics would all work together but they're fairly confident they would. If not though, I'm out about $1700. Ouch. So, CaptOz, please keep us in the loop. Thx.

apparently, they're a different part number. cosmetically the same, but some slight electronic differences.

I was told Mtech will accept the paddles, but stock sport for the 335xi will not. I have no clue why not. Another issue is that electronics are slightly different in 335i wheel, so wheel and buttons need to be replaced.

While Matt was able to get the mtech steering to work with paddles, I'm concerned that perhaps this won't be the case for the 335xi because of electronics. Just don't know, which is why waiting to see if CaptOz is successful.

As you may know, I am booked this Wednesday morning to have the paddles fitted.

I will update you with all details, i.e. any unexpected problems encountered, part numbers, etc.

The dealer was told specifically by BMW Germany that it can be done.

Cheers.
