Damn....too hot.....too hot

My car runs up to 260 on hot days and its normal operating temp is aroun 240. Obviously this isnt good, I need to start getting serious with BMWNA about that oil cooler that I dont have. Becuase those temps are too high.

Thumbs up I think you have nothing to worry about those temps

By all means get the cooler as you are supposed to have it. But let me put you at ease, I have oil cooler and the normal temps seem to be 240-250 range, so not really sure you have anything to worry about. Have you gone into limp mode? The car is supposed to do so if it gets unsafely hot.

260 degrees F isn't really that hot for the 335i...these F/I cars run much hotter than N/A cars. My car normally runs between 240-260 degrees F (and it's never been above 265 degrees F); more often than not, it's running around 250-255 degrees F. I don't have the oil cooler either. No worries. I think when you get above 265 degrees F, then you may be getting too hot. It is the summer...just keep an eye on it.

For sure, thanks guys. I do want the oil cooler, however, I really dont want to have to go throught the fights I know that Im going to have to put up with my dealer. I went there a few months ago and told them about it and told them that BMWNA said that it does need to be installed, and they just told me that they've never heard anything about it and that BMW would have to have a kit available for the install because its not simple. I also dont want to give the car up for a few days or however long its going to take them. But I will eventually, soon, have them do it......though it wont be easy convincing them. Im glad to know that other people's temps are around the same.

they're not really fighting it anymore.
Just tell your Service Mgr that you want it.

260 is nothing, as they said.

Basically, anything is safe, as long as it doesn't go into Limp Mode.

My car, with Oil cooler retrofit, the other day in Valencia, with 100deg temps hit about 260 and that's it.

With out it, driving it moderately hard, it would have hit limp mode for sure.

Go Get IT

No fighting needed. Just call BMWNA customer service and tell them you need the oil cooler. They'll have someone in New Jersey call you back. They'll ask you which dealer you want the work done at. They will then email/fax you the disclaimer to fax back to them. Soon the dealer will call you to schedule to get your car in. My dealer had a bunch of cooler kits in stock already for retrofit.

Well guys........keep in mind that the only reason im getting the idea that I dont have the oil cooler is based on that super old ass thread about how you should be able to see the oil cooler radiator through one of your lower air dams..........So if there are other ways to find out, or if thats not how your supposed to know, then I could have it and not know it.

I have a sport package car with step and temps have been averaging 240, not seen above 250, and I'm not going the "gentle" break-in route... I have the cooler. Fastest way to see if someone has the cooler is to turn the steering wheel to the left lock and look in front of the passenger side front tire. If the plastic vent has a silver radiator in front of it, bingo, you have a cooler...

Had the cooler since delivery in late May, so I don't know what the temps would be without it...

Are they also installing these for free on cars without the sports package?

In front of the front right tire, you will see this rediator lookin thing if you have the cooler. If you dont have it, it will either be a blank or solid plastic..

Say my dealer doesn't have any in stock, how long would it take them to get it once I got the process started? My free oil change is coming up in about ~3K miles, so it would be nice to get all the work done in one visit if possible. I plan on having them upgrade Progman too since mine suffers from that CD skipping issue not staying on the last track etc.

I started my oil cooler retro fit April 17 and my oil cooler is going in on June 25th at 7am. It would of been a week earlier but I was on vacation when my dealer called and said all parts had arrived. My 335i AT has hit 290-295 twice. Normal driving I'M at 260-270.

My car usually stays around 240 while driving normally. I have seen much higher temps while driving around the track however. As long as your car isnt overheating, I wouldnt worry about it. My car is a manual with the cooler from the factory.

Oh man.. I gotta story for you guys. A buddy of mine works as a tech at the local BMW Center. That day they were authorized to install oil cooler retrofit kits on two 335i's. His co-worker started to drain the oil and what came out was oil that he described as a "chocolate milkshake" color and texture. The 335i remained in the shop for a couple of weeks I think and the latest update I got was that the engine was replaced. The vehicle that the engine was replaced had no complaints and was only coming in for the oil cooler retrofit so I am not sure if coolant got mixed with the oil or the oil itself changes properties due to heat.

Maybe BMW should rethink their "maintenance program" to include normal oil & filter change intervals, as opposed to whatever the car's computer says or 12 months. My car currently has 11k mi. and my car's computer says it's due for an oil/filter change in 8k more mi. Yes, I know it's synthetic oil and do a lot of hwy. driving, but still...19k mi. between oil & filter changes...wtf?
