Testing for a worn clutch?

Is there a good test I can try to confirm if my clutch needs replacing?

Something other than dropping the clutch from a complete start and destroying it any further?

Roll out in 2nd gear so your speed means it's around the 2k rpm mark and floor it to 7k rpm. If the revs at any point go up and the speed doesn't so much (clutch slipping) then you can acertain it's knackered and time for a new one. How many miles do you have on the car? Any juddering when pulling away from stationary?

I beg to differ... The clutch will first start to slip in the upper gears. 20 map roll in top gear and floor it and wait to see what happens.

Yea, get to the high gears then floor it. It should slip then.

With you only having ~75000 miles I wouldn't think it would be shot. I have 100000 miles on my 325 and mine is still holding strong.

It all depends on how the car is driven. There are others on this forum with much less mileage and have to change the clutch.

I have a 2000 VW Golf beater since it was new with the original clutch. So far, I have 208,000 miles on it with no slipping at all.

Because I did an aggressive start by dropping it at 4k rpm and it slipped noticeably.

I've heard that to test it, put it 5th when going 50 and floor it. If you have slippage then your RPM will shoot up, if not then I believe it's good.

I blew mine out at 20,000 miles, it was an extremely rare thing but it happens. I hear our clutches last over 100k miles. I hear more of people changing their tranny/diff fluid twice before even changing the clutch

It really is. You can read up all you want about how to please a woman, you can look at all the diagrams in the world, but just like the clitoris, you won't know what the hell an apex is before you actually find it.
