Alloys milking....

Cleaned the 3 series on the weekend and noticed a milking effect on the 2 rears.

Its only on the polished dishes but am horrified as they have no kerbing so am confused as to how this can happen. The fronts look fine.

Any ideas as to why this has happend and how to cure??

P.S - they are LM reps bought from BM Autosport under a year ago.

Cheers

They are probably un-coated aluminum and are tarnishing. It's Aluminum's version of rust. If you refinish them and get them clear-coated, it won't happen again.

They are already lacquered though from new.

Speak to mark, he might have too look at the car and maybe get something sorted for you.

What have you been cleaning them with? Have you sealed them?

I too was told they are lacquered from new. Only use car shampoo to clean them and have always used poorboys sealant on them after every wash...

Sharp edges where the painted edge meets polished leads to very thin lacquer and normal washing will wear this away and the water gets underneath at some point. Polished wheels are normally sold with no warranty for this issue. Wheels can be refinished and lacquered again but will always be a risk. I got about 18 months out of mine with very careful washing.

Would this issue arise with more costly alloys such as BBS etc? i.e. is this the downside of buying aftermarket reps?

Any polished rim will be prone to this regardless of make. Reading this makes me think twice about polished lip alloys.

You can but alloys with a stainless steel lip which will not go this way, however if they are curbed your fucked and can not get them refurbed.
