question on tail of the dragon

I just put in an order for a 335i sedan (monaco blue) and should have it within 4-5 weeks according to my dealer.

I am planning on picking up the car in South Carolina and driving it back to Chicago. I heard about the tail of the dragon in NC/Tennesee border, and I have a question...

Assuming you're driving back to Chicago, how much extra time should I plan for if I take the Tail of the Dragon detour assuming I only want to go through it once. i.e. if anyone has done this, how long did it take to take the non-interstate roads?

Looking at the map, it looks like I would be on interstate 40, then get off on highway 74, take that to highway 28, then get on highway 129 (the actual road), then take 129 back to interstate 40/75 to continue my trip back on the interstate.

Thanks agian for any advice.

I'd allow an extra hour or two if you only intend to drive it. If you plan to stop along the way, make it several hours.

I plan a fwe extra hours there or spend the night... It's a fun road and will likely suck you in. Just make certain you take it casual, there are some lovely decreasing radius turns that can catch you out easy on a bike or in a car.

BUT, You likely want to drive back and do it again...

Here is a link to a good map of the area:

A good, challenging, route is to take 74 to 28 to 129. This will bring you in right at the Deals Gap motorcycle resort. Get your T shirt's there and then run the Dragon to the Foothills Parkway to 321. Take it to the tourist gaggle of Pidgeon Forge. You will have done a good day. From there you can come back through the park or go north. If you run the park road late be on the lookout for black bear. I've encountered them more than once.

My wife and I make the trip to this area every fall, stay at the same motel, in the same room. It's a very beautiful area and worth staying the night somewhere. There is a very big, modern casino in Cherokee if that kind of thing floats your boat.
