It really depends on the model years. You cannot simply look at the wheels and determine if they will work on your E9X.

Build dates 2006-09/2009 are different from build dates 09/2009+

Feel free to shoot me a PM if you have any further questions.

Its all about the year of the car. Instead of generalizing, simply post what you're actually trying to do and myself and others and try to help.

I've seen several parties advertising 287 wheels that include tpms. My impression is that the 287 wheels are "second gen" (or whatever correct terminology is for 2009 and later body style) and that generation of tpms will not work on my 2008 e90.

Since in most cases the sellers don't know which model year the tpms they are selling are compatible with, I was trying to see if there was any logic or pattern to tpms based on the wheel style.

For example 189 are fist gen wheels and 287 are second gen wheels?.....Not saying that's the case, just trying to see if I can determine tpms compatibility before buying a set of used tires and wheels and mounting them on my car.

If both style wheels came with both type of sensors, then I understand there is no way to determine if the sensors are compatible unless I have the build date of the car they came on.
