Angry Steering Wheel Wobble between 40-60 mph! Advice?

Hello everyone,

I just replaced my rft tires with non-rft tires. Upon getting my new tires mounted and balanced, I noticed a slight vibration in the wheel at 40-50 mph. I took the car back to the shop, the rebalanced it again. Vibration still occurred at 40 mph. I thought it was due to the shop doing a bad job so I took it to another shop. Still noticed the same issue after getting the tires balanced by them. Also, I notice a little vibration when coming to a stop off the highway.

Does anyone have an idea of what the problem could be? The problem began after getting my new tires.

Did your shop use a Hunter Road Force GSP9700? When I got my new wheels and tires, I found that the install shop I used did not have a road force machine, only a high-speed Corghi balancer. The road force machine actually puts a real load on the wheel and tire.

Also, I'd recommend finding a small independent shop with the Hunter machine. Since they actually have to pay for their expensive equipment, they generally have a couple technicians that actually know how to use them properly.

I believe they were using the usual high speed corghi balancer. Will using the GSP9700 make a significant different with the balancing? If so, I'll definitely take it to a shop to get it balanced there.

Are you running stock wheels (hub rings for aftermarket)? Did you happen to see what the out of balance measurement was? If not, look inside your wheels and see how much tape weight they used.

Yes, I'm running on stock rims. I found a shop that has the road force balancing and he told me with our cars they have to use a special type of adapter for our cars when balancing tires due to us having studless hubs. Saying that otherwise the balancing won't be centered properly.

I'm thinking whoever balanced my car didn't use the special adapter needed, so ill take my car there to get balanced.

Will update with results

In my experience the Hunter machines really do a much better job. The last set of 18" wheels I had balanced on a Corghi machine. I felt a bit of a vibration at highway speeds. I then went to a shop with the Hunter machine, which made a noticeable difference. The tech that did the rebalance showed me the before balance specs, which were running in the double digits for road force in Lbs. After, the measurements were in the low single digits.

Update: Got it rebalanced at a shop that had the hunter balancing machine. Even before Goodyear worked on it, their lead mechanic checked the balance and found the front tires out of balance and also showed me how the other shops didn't place the weights in the correct places. Looked like a triangle versus being opposite of each other.

Everything feels good now. Thanks for everyone who gave input on this.

Did you get a refund from the other shop? How much more was the RF balancing versus the other style?

Yes, I called corporate for TiresPlus and got them to issue me the refund.

No, the RF balancing was the same price as the normal balancing machine. You can find places that have RF balancing machines via this link:

Glad you got it fixed! We use a RoadForce balancer to balance all our wheels when our customers purchase tires.

A lot of shops seem to misplace the weights.

I have a question...did the final place that balanced your wheels correctly use any type of adapter (which you spoke of earlier in the thread) instead of using the center hub bore cone for balancing? I've heard that lug centric vehicles require the use of HAWEKA, etc. type adapters to account for this style of mounting but wasn't sure if an adapter/flange would benefit wheel balancing on our cars since our wheels are meant to be hub centirc...anyone have any thoughts on this?

VMRWheels: when balancing your wheel/tire setups do you use any type of adapters/flanges to center the wheel before balancing?

Yes, he used the 'finger' type of adapter when he balanced it. I'm not sure what the actual name is, but that is what he called it.
