Question about 18" Style 5's

I have a set of staggered 18" Style 5's from ECS.
I put them on the e90 today and there's something weird going on.

The hub rings that came with the wheels fit on the rear hub/wheel on the driver side and the front hub/wheel on the pass side. I checked all of the wheels and they seem to not have play. Maybe it's a manufacturing tolerance issue? I did buy the wheels used and other than this they all seem to match.

Anyone have insight on this? Should I not drive it?

so you're saying the hubrings you have only fit on two of the four corners? maybe two of the rings are wrong sizes?

I'm saying there were 2 hub rings included in the kit. 2 of the wheels currently have no rings and 2 do. But, they only fit on opposite corners (if that makes sense).

Driver front: no ring
Driver rear: ring
Pass front: ring
Pass rear: no ring

The fit just seemed very loose without the rings on the couple wheels that have them. Does that matter? Or does the wheel rely on being tight on the hub center?

ohhhhh. i get it now. yes you need the hub rings. the style 5's came from e39's which have a bigger bore. our e9x's and the rest of the bmw world has 72.6 bore. thats why the ones without the hub rings dont sit snugly.

just get two more hub rings for the other wheels and you're good to go.

That is really odd. Is it possible that the hub centric rings are stuck in the center bores of the snug wheels and you didn't notice?

Nope, no rings at all on them. I have no idea why 2 of the wheels would be tight on the hubs with no rings and the other 2 would be loose. Also, the ring that I got with the set won't even fit in one of the fronts, too tight.

The style 5 were made for a lot of different BMWs, both with 72.6 and 74.1 (for the e39) center bore.

So I guess you got 2 wheels with 74.1 and rings, and 2 wheels with 72.6 center bore with no rings.

I think I just solved my own mystery. The PO of the wheels refinished them. I'm guessing he mixed up the centers and put one 72.6 on the front wheel and one on the other back wheel. No worries now I guess.

Hey Matt,

The Style 5s that came from ECS where a mixed set the fronts have 74.1mm CB and the rears have 72.6mm
you need to use the hub rings on the front wheels only

Your car looks great BTW

I just confirmed that the centers are swapped on the driver side. I have a feeling the 2mm difference is what is making it rub on the driver side in the rear with 2 people in the car. Fuck. Now I have to take them all off, dismount the tires and swap the centers. Anyone have a link or how to on doing that? I don't want to fuck em up.

You don't need to dismount the tires to take of the centers , google Style5 refinishing for instructions
If you have anything larger then 255 in the rear you will rub no matter what and you will need to roll , I have 265 and was rubbing and I'm not as low as you are

And just as an FYI

Style 5's in 18's in stock form will not fit on a e39 dues to the hub centric diameter being to small.
17's fit on e39's and can also be used with a reducer ring on a number of other bimmers

Actually that information is erroneous ,
E39s where available with both 17 inch and 18inch Style 5s ,
the way to know which car the rears come from is actually pretty easy

ET22= E38 = 72.6mm CB
ET24= E39 = 74.1mm CB
