Album Art with USB Flash Drive

I loaded a bunch of music on a flash drive and tried playing it through the center console usb port. The files have album art embedded in the MP3 using a script for iTunes and no album art is showing up.

The car has nav only, no apps or extended bt. Should I be seeing album art on the split screen? Anybody else with just nav have it working?

Moving files with album art is funky. Even iCloud updating from my Mac to the iPhone 4S can lose album art. This stuff is all still ify IMO, so I would wouldn't point to the finger too quickly at BMW software.

Your music collection (this is where you copy your music from USB stick or mp3 or DVD or cd) on BMW is nothing more then files and folders and it does not support album art.

You get album art only when you connect your iPhone via USB, or when you use bmw apps supported app like pandora, then you get art from pandora.

Hope this helps.

Covers for MP3 files will be displayed if you add the images to the ID3 tags. It will not work if you just put it in the same folder. This should work for music collection and USB sticks.

I was thinking the same thing, but have you actually tried this with the BMW system, or is this just a theory?

Album art is only supported from an iPhone. Album art does not work from USB devices, MP3 CDs, or music ripped to the HDD with album art embedded.

I assume this also means you need ipod connectivity via USB only, not Y-cable, which means BMW Assist.

It has to be through a stock Apple cable (not the Y). I wasn't even aware that the Y cable's still worked in newer BMWs. These were originally used as a way to play DRM content off of your device by BMW as a workaround, I think this is no longer needed. Can you confirm that your car will not work with a stock cable in the USB port in the center console? I know that Album art only functions with the normal cable in my car, the Y cable though doesn't even work. The USB port in the center console should be able to control the iPhone and give album artwork, per the BMW USA site iPod connectivity via USB is standard (at least in the states).

F30 is different from E90
Standard F30 models need the Y cable.
With other options that have been discussed on teh forum you dont need the Y-cable

Odd, I have an F10 now and I assumed the electronics would be the same in the F30 as far as this stuff goes.

I guess I shouldn't have been so specific, I meant iPods/iPhones/(even my iPad works).

Hi all,

For all of you dealing with Mp3's via USB and CD, I have a few questions.

The first thing I have observed today is kind of odd. I plugged an external USB mp3 player in the center console USB port. The songs appeared on my display. When I selected the songs, it started playing other songs in the flash drive. For example I select the 5th song, it puts a check beside it, but plays the 6th. When I select the 6th song, it plays 3rd. And so on.

The second thing is about the ordering of the songs in the Mp3 CD. I put all songs in the root directory of the CD. About 110 songs. All files are named as [Artist name - Album name - Track - Song Title].mp3. However when I open the CD menu, the display shows all files shuffled. I was thinking that the files will be in a logical order, i.e. alphabetically ordered filenames. This is also odd.

Having these said, can you folks write your observations? I was unable to find any settings regarding Mp3 playing, except one setting regarding shuffling. I cannot properly use my Mp3 CDs. :-(

Album artwork works with regular iPod cables, not with official BWM iPod cable?!

I have a 2011 BMW with the Professional Navigation system, and when I connect an iPod or an iPhone into the USB socket in the arm rest with a normal iPod/iPhone cable, I get mp3 album art work on the Navi screen.

Because the normal iPod/iPhone cable is so long, I decided to go into a BMW store to purchase a BMW accessory iPod cable which is only about 10 inches long, and would fit much better into the armrest of my car. This official BMW iPod cable is different from a normal Apple iPod cable in that the BMW cable has the iPod connector on one end, and the other end is divided into a normal USB connector AND a separate AUX connector.

When I connect the same iPod or iPhone into the arm rest with this BMW iPod cable (iPod connector into the iPod, the USB connector into the USB socket and the AUX connector into the AUX socket) I only get audio and track info, but no album art work. If I disconnect the AUX connector and leave just the USB connector in, I don't get audio at all.

So, I only get audio + track info + album artwork using normal Apple iPod cables (or a similar Brand X iPod cable) with just the iPod connector on one end and the USB connector on the other. Can anybody tell me why the official BMW iPod cable accessory disables album artwork?

The difference is the enhanced USB/BT option that your car has. If you have this option, you can plug in using the regular Apple USB cable and you get artwork displayed. For those of us without the enhanced USB option, we HAVE to use the BMW Y-cable which does not support album artwork.

Does anyone happen to have Professional Navigation (609) without extended bluetooth/USB? Other posts have suggested you get a commbox with this option alone but I haven't read any posts confirming it.

In the UK at least, selecting 609 professional navigation automatically gives you extended Bluetooth/USB.

This is correct ^

I have played audio with Album art embedded into the ID3 tags on the current Nav system (CIC 609 Nav) for both E90 and F30.

And you can confirm that you DO NOT have enhanced BT/USB and/or BMW Apps?

It was on a test drive 2012 335i Sedan w/ 609 Navi, so I am unsure of the other options.

I also saw album art a few years back in 2010-2011 E93 loaner, again w/ 609 Navi and unsure of other options. Both times with an 8GB USB stick.

I'm pretty sure playing over Enhanced BT will not include album art, being an audio protocol (A2DP). I could be wrong though - never tried it.

Yeah, playing over BT doesn't give you album art, but if you have enhanced USB you can get album art from your iPod via regular Apple USB cable. My understanding is that if you don't have enhanced USB, the y-cable with your iPod will NOT give you album art. Maybe you can get album art with thumb drive.
