Aftermarket iPod integration 335i

hi there

I have a two week old 335i which did not come with the iPod integration. Wasn't available and I didn't want to wait 3-4 months.
Anyway, is there an aftermarket solution that is easy to install? Such as a solutiont hat plugs into the CD stacker tray in the boot?

thanks for letting me know

Frank

The simplest and cheepest is to buy the $30 cable from BMW that plugs into the aux and lighter plug in the centre console. While it doesn't give you the readout on the display, the sound quality is as good as it gets.

you can get them from apple too, and cheaper from memory

I'm in the same boat as imhotmp. Spoke to my stealership today and booked in for some iPod integeration thingy that's $700-$800, it lets you control it from the wheel controls.

Any thoughts on this one, the service guy did not know much as he indicated it was "fairly new". Should I be asking for a specific thing?

Only reason I'm keen is I hate using the little scroll wheel on the iPod (fat fingers I guess).

Thanks,

S

Hi Wopalx

Which stealership quoted you? You should find out more details. I'm after a solution that lets you control from the steering wheel. Seems like it is probably the BMW factory unit but they are fitting it locally.

Thanks

i've got it on mine. works like a charm. doesnt need to be a ipod. I bought a USB key 2gb for $30 and I leave it in there all the time.
I think the part alone is a few hundred dollars but the install have to pull console apart.

Update:

Dropped my car into the stealership today for the installation of the iPod integration kit. Service advisor indicated it was not the new USB one but the one that replaces the CD player. Still he told me I would be able to control all the iPod stuff via Idrive so that's what I was after. Mind you I got the older service dude, probaly thinks an iPod is some kind of walking frame ).

Anyway the 4pm collection time went and passed and about 5pm I gave them a call. Was told they were still working on it and I might not get the car back today.

After some investigation seams they are having some issues with the update to the vehciles software..... bugger I have to drive the loan car home, must say a 320i is a dog compared to the 335!!!

Just wondering if others have had the same issues? Did the stealership charge more for the installation due to the software upload issues?

Very much hoping the job will be finished tomorrow.

On another issue has anyone in Aus installed the "TVandNav2go" kit from the US? I am looking at ordering one for my car so considering what feedback there is locally before parting with the hard earned.

Thks,

S

$800 is robbery! Just so you can operate your ipod via idrive? I bought a $7 cable from Dick Smith and plugged it into the aux input. Works fine. I can think of a lot of other mods I can do with the savings.

I got the dealer-installed (MOST) iPod integration adapter installed for $400US. It did not require a software update.

I am able to control it using the steering wheel as well as the iDrive. Uses CD1, CD2, CD3, CD4 for controls on the iDrive.

CD1-Playlists
CD2-Artists
CD3-Songs
CD4-Genre

Limitations: 500 listing per category. So, when I look at the list of artists, it only goes to N. Furthermore, it takes FOREVER to spin with the iDrive knob down to N. If you choose an artist, then choose to go back, it will start back up at A *sigh*...

Also, another limitation is the fact that if you choose CD2, CD3, or CD4, it could take anywhere from 30 seconds to minutes for the data to return. That is because it is doing a full scan of the iPod.

I'm still satisfied.

Just make sure you have LOTS of playlists! CD1 is THE FASTEST at loading and is practically instant. It is the default.

Got the car back the following day, service manager was very nice to bring it to my work after hours.

Took me a day or so to work out what was what, I then added a bunch of play lists to make it easier to use.

Overall I am very happy, it's an expensive fix to not having full integration but far better than taking your eyes off the road to play with the scroll wheel.
