Anyone run 89 octane?

I always use 93 but with the price of gas going up I am tempted. I have heard premium gives better mpg, so it might be a wash. Curious to hear if anyone uses it on a NA E90 and how it runs. Thanks

I run 91 regularly but I accidentally put regular in it once. It didn't knock audibly at all but it had ABSOLUTLY NO POWER lol!

It really is. You can read up all you want about how to please a woman, you can look at all the diagrams in the world, but just like the clitoris, you won't know what the hell an apex is before you actually find it.

That's odd, is there any reason why 91 is the standard in cali?

wow i didn't know cali only gets 91.

I only use Shell 93 in mine.

Unless you have a tune for it, don't run under 91. Your car will run lean as the flashpoint of 89 octane and 91+ octane isn't the same. Immediate difference will be loss in power, and loss in fuel economy (maybe not drastic, but noticeable). Overtime (like way overtime - think 250k+ miles) you can actually form mini craters on the top of your pistons.

Started using 89, tried higher grade, didn't make any discernable difference in either performance or mileage - went back to 89 and have never used anything else since then.

Runs as good as a NA 328 can. Depending on the engine configuration, there is no such thing as the higher you go in octane, the better it runs. At a certain point, higher grade does nothing but cost more...

Now if it was a turbo car, supercharged, or running nitrous in very hot summer months - the higher grade may be helpful. I run 93 in my T/A with 427 LS1, 11.5:1 compression & nitrous and that is fine. I tried AV gas at >100 octane a couple times and it made no difference. The T/A was tuned on the dyno with HPTuners using 93 octane...

$3.83 for 89 in western PA

Up 50 cent from last month - now they're blaming the rising prices of gas on East Coast due to shut down of a refinery...

BMW has admitted that there will be NO issues running a lower octave fuel in their cars. There will be a slight decrease in hp and tq, but other than that, the computer will take care of timing advancement and will not allow the engine to ping.

If you plan on keeping your car a long time, definitely try to use Top Tier Gas as tested by many of the major automotive manufacturers. The test makes sure that the gas company is putting in all the cleaning agents to help the fuel system and combustion chamber stay clean. Yes, the list does change based on the latest tests so retailers can fall off the list or be added.

That's good information to know but I won't consider lower octane fuel until gas is >$7, but by that time I think I will be riding around on a tricked out bicycle instead of a modded BMW

I use 93 only because my car is tuned for it, but also because I don't mind spending $3 extra every week for the peace of mind.
