I think this is the top of your engine - not sure I can see one of the previous breathers?
http://realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?...83&hg=11&fg=15 The breather is clearly visible as part 11 on an earlier 320d. http://realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?...68&hg=11&fg=15 There must be some way of providing the same function on your engine - but not sure how?

I think you are confused. Every car has a breather, in the old days it was just a simple rubber hose venting and/or dripping oil. If you are looking for an breather filter, there is no such thing. The link referrred to:
http://realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?...83&hg=11&fg=15 is what i have on my 320d and this link shows what's inside http://www.auto-innovations.com/site...MWn47t288.html (if it doens't open on page 8 just go there, in french but not that difficult. You can click each pic and it will expand) There's nothing serviceable here. You have 3 cyclonic separators which are the 3round things under no 3, and shown in detail at the bottom of the page. The dotted arrows are a bypass, with the valve at position 1, such that when you have a hole in a piston it doesn't blow oil the oil thru the breather pipe into the turbo |

Not sure what you mean?
There is no old fashioned external piping with a wire filter anymore. The breathers are integrated into the cylinder head covers now using cyclonic separators (yup like mini dysons) to remove oil. Its all non servicable, unless you want to change the whole heaf cover. |

It appears from the link that the breather function is now fully integrated in the head design, but this was not always the case.
Looking here on an early e90 320d, you can see the breather as a separate part no. 11..... http://realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?...68&hg=11&fg=15 ....this head design is similar to that on the original 320d and 330d from 10+ years ago. While the e90 part is a mini cyclonic unit, it's design was clearly constrained by the fit of the original breather which was not cyclonic but had a hole with a foam filter piece in the round part. This foam filter used to block, with not good consequences for the turbo - it became a consumable (or replaceable by the cyclonic alternative - something I did on my 330d E46 which had a very dirty foam filter after 100k miles). The cyclonic breather was clearly better, though as it is quite small (part 11 version, not the integrated one) there is still perhaps a question as to whether this also may get clogged eventually (though no evidence I've seen).
