Any advice on this appreciated.

I had the red boost hose replaced on my car (335D) back in Sept 11.
Since the work was done the car has been driven less than 2000mls and the hose is leaking again.

BMW have advised me that warranty work is not warrantied in any way.

Is that correct?

You got this done at BMW? If so the parts should have a 24 month warranty so yes, you should be covered.

The work itself probably isn't warrantied, but the parts fitted will be. And as long as you're still in your warranty period, if it's leaking again, take it in and treat it as a new claim.

If the work was done under warranty then the replacement parts only have the balance of the warranty of the original vehicle under which they where replaced - not a new 24 month warranty.

You only get the 24 month warranty on parts you pay for.

In the same situation with my gearbox mate. As said you only get the remainder of the manufacturers warranty. It's a frigging joke.

If I had paid for it myself the following month (out of manufacturers warranty) I would be covered by a 2 year unlimited mileage warranty.

They are correct. Warranty work comes with no warranty. Only work you actually pay for comes with the 24 month warranty.

It is a stupid, backwards rule and there to no doubt make them money, but it is true unfortunately.

Still, this doesn't stop you from kicking off on a Saturday morning in front of other customers now does it?

Agree with Subzero, noisy complaints in the middle of a busy showroom works a treat. I did it a few years back about an issue with a Golf Gti, up to that point nothing was happening, then got invited into the dealer principals office and all was sorted.

It seems that as others have suggested, warranty work is not covered past the date of your original warranty.
A very strange scenario IMO,had I paid for the work it would have been covered,bit fecked,but there it is.

Thankfully I have a good dealer, and the seals were replaced on the hose, the work was carried out as a goodwill gesture.

That is my understanding. When I had the clutch and flywheel replaced in Sep2010, I did think about making a small contribution to get a full 2yrs but didn't bother in the end and the new parts were only warranted to the end of the manufacturer's original 3yr warranty. I'm sure BMW would offer some sort of goodwill gesture though if things did go sour within 2 years.

Ian, as this is the 2nd time the boost hose has gone, I'd expect BMW to act reasonably if it failed again in the near future.

I'd expect the same Ant, and to be fair to my dealer they were originally only laying down the BMW 'law' in terms of failures on warranty work, and charges being made if warranty work needing redoing outside of the original warrantied period.

The good news was the boost hose seals were replaced as a goodwill gesture.
The bad news was the fault that they discovered when the car was hooked up to diagnostics,something that could cause severe financial pain!

I'll find out on Monday.
