hi bmw fans i just bought myself my first bmw and it is 320d e90 177bhp on 58 reg facelift with 80000miles on clock.and my big question is does this car runs with timing belt or timing chain and what intervals is of changing it?Thanks in advance for your any information.

Welcome to the forum, Im pretty new as my car is my first BMW but Im sure it is chain driven and only the very early models were belt driven

Welcome to the forum.
It is chain driven.
I hope you will find plenty of useful stuff on this website.
Since you are on 80K and most of the turbo fails b.w 80-100K onward. In order to avoid it, change your oil every 10K or after 1 year, whichever comes first.
Also CCV / Oil breather is advisable to be changed at 90K to avoid turbo failures and excessive oil burning issues.

hi again thanks for your info both of yous but i just wonder does it matter how these miles was done turbo wise.cause looking of service history it seems that miles was done on motorways mainly.plus it was serviced every 10000 miles. does it matter or not?

i am also new to bmw's the guy i bought mine off of (97 318i) said that it needs a oil change and that he can tell when oil is leaking out of the filter it needs changed...is this true???

Servicing every 10K, it cant be possible if its a main dealer service.
Upto what K it has BMW service history?
And since when it is having indi service?
10K service is brilliant as far as they use LL04 oil, and not the one what most indis' use.

There are few reasons for oil coming out of the filter (not necessary that it needs service).
First check other spots for engine oil leakage such as Rocker cover gasket, Vaccum pump seals, solenoid seal.

Now if there is only oil coming out of the filter area, the previous person used aftermarket filter, which are not OEM and hence creates such issues.

Always use OEM oil filter and O rings to avoid oil coming out of oil filter cap.

However if there is oil leakge at other place (as mentioned above), then you may have clogged CCV / oil breather, which increases pressure under the rocker cover gasket, and unltimately oil leakage through most of O rings.

sorry my mistake it was done about every 20000 miles in bmw specialist garage but not main dealer,but i am not sure if they changed oil every time they done service.to be honest as 80000 done, car feels pretty solid and engine sound nice and clean.but i might do full oil filter change soon and oil breather as well,to be on safe side.

Spot on.
Make sure you use LL04 oil. Mobil ESP 1 fills all the ticks especially for the cars with turbos. Filter always from BMW (no after market).
Get your oil breather valve + hoses changes (around 100-120£ depending on how much discount you get). If you do not change the hoses, they may break at any time later, and you will have to pay the labour again at that time. And most of the time the hoses are filled up with mustard like oily stuff.
One of my friend got his changed recently. Two BMW specialist gave him 150 and 250 price tag excluding spare parts. He ended up getting it changed at local indi who charged him only £80. No problems at all.
Lastly, to be on safe side, change oil every 10K (as its high mileage car).

BMW recommends 0W-30.

I personally prefer 0W-40 as it protects the engine better during the summer compared to 0w-30.

In simple words, 0W protects the egine better during the winter time compared to 5W. (on cold start, oil flows through the engine and turbo easily).
Whereas 40 oil is slightley thicker to protect the engine better on high temperatures compared to 30. (on slight compensation of MPGs.)

Most of users go for 5w-30 as it is easily available. See which one is convenient for you.

thanks for your kind help makkan00.i forgot to tell you that i have got 1 year warranty with
it from autoprotect so i think if anything goes wrong i will be covered hopefuly.it should cover all electrical and mechanical plus i get european cover as well.but anyways big thanks again for your usefull info.

You are welcome. Read the terms and conditions of warranty to check whether they require you to get it services at main dealer or your warranty is valid after servicing from any garage.

Bear in mind your car has the newer Garett turbo which is more reliable and shouldn't fail like the older ones did

Look forward to all the warning lights and engine management lights coming on. Having to take it to Main dealers at a cost of £148 just to diagnose it. Then a bill of £2000 because they are not sure what it is so they want to replace valvetronic motor (£200) Eccentric valve sensor (£250), Once rocker cover gaskets off then it needs a new one at £ 70 plus new bolts at £50. Takes 6 hours at £148 an hour, £1750 Just to get a light off. I always wanted one,got one, Can't to get rid. Give me back my Honda Civic Type-R Anyday
