Our lives outside of Z's...

Just thought I'd share a picture of my garden. I grow prize-winning vegetables and have a very green thumb. Here are some of my yellow straight-necked squash and green zucchini that are just now blooming. Aren't they beautiful?!

Better than my mom's garden. As she's gotten older, it has shrunk from a 1/4 acre down to about 20x40. She used to feed my dad's whole crew on vegetables and eggs from the "farm". Now it's just them and the coyotes and the dogs. The dogs actually go out and eat the peas off the vine and the asparagus right out of the ground.

Did I mention all my veggies and fruits are organic? I don't use any pesticides, not even seven-dust! I hand-weed every day or every-other day, and have a bird-friendly environment. They are my 'pesticide'. The Eastern Phoebe's, Bluebirds, Mockingbirds and Cardinal's all take up patrol on the fence and dive-bomb insects lol! It's hilarious and incredibly entertaining to watch. When things get really growing, I will go to a exotic pet store and purchase Mantis' and turn them loose in my garden - Voila! Insects gone

Very cool, hadn't thought of mantises. I'll have to order my mom some. There are quail (tame/wild) and pheasant in my mom's yard. Occassional wild turkey. The chickens do a good job on the insects, but it's the jack rabbits that cause the most damage. Fortunately, a couple big labradors keep them in check.

Yes, rabbits are horrible garden pests but make a yummy meal. I'm getting ready to install a bat box on the West side of my house, they will help tremendously with mosquitos and other people pests. I am trying to attract pheasants also to my area but they have been so over hunted that wild ones are all but gone .
Planting lure fields are illegal here for hunting, but I think for purposes of wildlife management I'm going to plant this fall, no hunting of any feathered animal is allowed on my property. I do however have one friend who I allow to hunt deer, squirrel (tree rats) and rabbits.

My mom gardens up a storm every summer: zucchini, spinach, tomatoes, grapes. They make homemade wine with the grapes.

My mom is so hard to buy for, but this is probably the only gift she's ever really put to good use:

Awww takedown, your mom is beautiful! You can NEVER go wrong with gardening stuff as a gift for those of us who appreciate them. I'm not a jewelry freak or clothes fanatic. But buy me some flowers I can plant or a new pair of gardening gloves or bird bath, and I'm in heaven

That's not my mom! That's an ad!

I bet enfield, Caddyshk, and intgr8r will have a good laugh if they read this!

i do know what you mean though, f-n-i. Women have such particular tastes, that it's just safer, and better usually, just to get them something practical that you know they'll use.

Yea, I expect some major poking-fun-at when they wake up and read their daily soap-opera here

Greenland Irrigation does my lawn/garden. Can I post pics of my garden done by them on this thread??

PS - do not roll around in my grass. You may grow 2 heads

Kidding - the city has banned such substances - so now rolling around is allowed!

I'd love to be back at my ol' condo....23rd floor view of Lake Michigan and part of Lincoln Park (Chicago), park on the 3rd floor, no grass to cut, no snow to shovel....ah the good life. Oh yeah, the organic grocery store was a few blocks away, you know, for all the good stuff.

That's what I love about Condo life. I live on the 38th floor, and I can see Lake Ontario and the entire city. The boats are all out now....
