Vibration when stopped, in D
Hi, I own a '07 328i with 87k miles.
When I am at a stop, in D, I get a mild vibration and it sounds as though it is directly below me or behind me. If I put my car in neutral, smooth as can be. Back into D, the vibration comes back slowly. So far it's been mild though I'm concerned about a long-term problem. Has anyone else experienced this? Were you able to resolve? thanks for any help / comments EDIT: update as of 3/4/2015. I'm still on my original coils at 138k miles, except for 1, which has around 20k miles. I'm monitoring them closely as I experienced misfires a week ago. Reset throttle adapts and swapped coils for diagnostic purposes but misfires haven't occurred since. A couple things made some improvement on this condition, for me. Not saying they will work for you, but for the record: a. I installed subframe bushing inserts. This helped noticeably but did not eliminate. b. I removed and re-torqued my transmission mounts (recently I decided to go ahead and replace since they had hi miles and I was going to be under the car for other things). The improve here was subtle, perhaps placebo. If I experience misfires again, following the suspect coils, I will change out my other five coils and spark plugs and update this thread. Look at your RPM needle while reproducing the issue. Is it going down near 500 rpms?
Mine does sometime for a couple seconds, then the ECU adapts and revs up to 700 and it stops. Also try activating / deactivating the AC to see if that changes anything.

Yes on the rpm's. Forgot to mention. When the rev's drop, the vibration begins. Doesn't happen in neutral (but didn't pay attention to the revs). It has happened with and without air on; today, with air off. |

Many of us have that problem. Could be anything from spark plugs/coils or maybe MAF/air filter or possible dirty valves. Don't mean to hijack the thread but when you put it into neutral, the revs are supposed to increase. This doesn't happen for me, it stays near 500-600. Anyone know why? I noticed this when I started getting rough idles.

In neutral, my revs stay low, around 500+, same as in D. Only difference is the vibration. |

So after the car settles in (I guess you could say when the engine "warms up") and the engine revs drop near 500, when you put it in neutral, does it stay there or does it increase? The reason I ask is because my uncle's C-Class does the same thing (though the idle isn't as rough) but when I put it in neutral, the revs increase and the rough idle goes away.

i had this problem with my old 325xi
took it to the dealer they spent a week working it out but in the end they just programed the car to idle at 700 instead of 500 and the problem went away. dont know if that was only a temp solution though =/ |

The vibration goes away when the car is in neutral because there is no power going to the drivetrain. My car vibrates when the car is in gear, and the ac is off, which makes the RPMs drop a little lower. I don't think there is anything wrong with the engine or car, it's just a resonant frequency that vibrates the car at that particular RPM through the transmission.
