would you file a claim with insurance for this?

Just purchased a 2009 335xi 2 weeks ago and apparently someone tried to steal my headlights. Weird thing about it is, there was no damage to my hood so I don't know how they got this far.

Don't. Just go buy the tab repair kits.

Mine broke also after hitting a pothole.. I doubt someone was trying to steal yours. Here's the part# ofr the repair kit: 63117182519
It should cost about $20+ and your local dealership probably carry it or will order it for you.

The repair kit looks kinda hokey in my opinion, but I agree with JTWCT.
Could "possibly" be vandals or could be a pothole, maybe something else too???

Good thing about vandals is it would be considered a comprehensive claim and not go against your record like a collision claim would. Possibly carry a lower deductible also (some set their policy that way as the cost difference is minimal).

Would the OP need to file a police report if he were to assume it was vandalism in order to get this insurance claim?

I thought maybe it was a pothole until I saw the passenger side. the entire clip is gone instead of just cracked in the middle like the other.

I mean I really don't want to do insurance. I'm just worried that if I don't report this and something does go wrong with the headlight down the road, that the dealership won't honor my warranty because the clips had been replaced.

But now that I think about it, would this be covered under my manufacturers warranty since it isn't a wear and tear item?

Sorry for the delay. Some companies may require a police report but many others would not. If there is no chance of someone else being injured or repurcussions it is unlikely it would be required.

"Headlight thefts" were huge back a few years ago. There was such pressure from consumers that were upset with manufacturers, that they changed the designs to make it much less simple to be stolen.

Dealerships in NJ got hit for 20-30 cars per night (mostly Audi A4's, Acura TL's and Maxima's)

Yeah, at 900+ per replacement, at the dealer, they are hardly cheap...

Went to Bayside BMW, nice people, Service was kind of a joke though. Suggested I go with the headlight repair kit then proceeded to say it would cost 200 dollars to install. To which I replied "its a piece of plastic with 2 screws that I could buy for 20 dollars online." After politely declining to pay that much I went to their parts desk who were asking 50 dollars for the part. Waited 45 more minutes for my car while they kept saying "it will be right out were giving you the complimentary wash." Car came out unwashed, Thanks Bayside BMW!
