Should I buy an M3...

...discuss .

There has been a bit of talk of M3's recently, especially in the classifieds section, and got me twitching a bit so wonder whether I should just get one to replace the Zed.

Absolutely nothing wrong whatsoever with the Zed, it goes like a train, costs relatively little to maintain (OK, mpg & road tax aren't terrific ), but just wondered whether an M3 would firstly tick a box and offer an element more practicality for someone with two children now.

Spotted this little beauty which seems like very good value. I know loads of people wouldn't touch a manual (perhaps reflected in the price) but I just wouldn't get on with a redundant left leg with the DCT. I like the colour combo (assuming the red isn't too in your face) and seems good spec and low miles (don't know no.of owners).

http://www.bmw.co.uk/bmwuk/bmwauc/de...1x12-price_ASC

Is the general maintenance all that expensive .

It would make my like easier if you could talk me out of it .

No

You always moan about the cost of road tax and were thinking of part ex-changing the X3 to save a few bob.

Unless you've got more cash, and you should know!

Do it!

The third service is a big one (spark plugs, diff oil etc), but at that mileage, it may have had it. This would be in the region of £700 - £800.

In two years, I've done 27k miles and have had this service, an oil service and a brake fluid service.

Road tax is currently £460 and I pay £149 for a yearly tracker subscription.

With the duration that you keep cars Rog, the only expense (other than finanace) that you will have to pay out is likely to be fuel if you time it right

I've no issues with a manual at all (although I haven't tried the DCT yet) and I get an average of 20mpg.

Roger.....the roof seems to have fallen off !?!?!?!

Now would seem to be a good time to change as here are a plethora of hard and soft tops to chose from with a good spec

My personal preference would be :

Coupe
Dct
Red or tan leather
Black or grey in colour

And as many of the option boxes ticked as poss

You are of course absolutely spot on but it's only a side step from my car so I can still moan like a bitch . Hoping to save money on my wifes car definately, not looking really to spend any more on mine, but a side-step could be possible.

Ha ha, no bias at all, I like it .

Yup, I do change before big bills hit me, but can catch me out sometimes.

Mmm, you're average isn't too great is it, given your miles I guess quite a bit of motorway work, one concern would be how bad would I get the average to given my commute and driving style .

I have kept my eye on one if I'm honest but a manual one is a tougher search. Plus, it would have to be something special to drag me out of the Zed, and one of the few 'attainable' cars that could do that is something I've never owned; being an M car.

Tut tut tut Roger, and you told me you were trading the Zed for a Renault Twingo!

That Black M3 'vert is lovely, it would have to be DCT for me though, but I could never, ever put up with 20mpg, as I am the tightest man in NATO.

Well I get about 18mpg at the minute but reckon the M would be similar (if not worse )

Lots of short journeys is going to give you 14-16 mpg.

Is the lower mpg worth a permanent semi and a big grin while you're driving - fuck yeah (IMO)

Any self respecting car enthusiast need to own an M V8 at some point in their lives, even if it is convertible.
