Virgin Media customers

Something for nothing:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-16491614

Free of charge

Virgin Media's upgrade will mean customers currently signed up for 10Mbps will be boosted to 20Mbps, while users on 20Mbps and 30Mbps packages will both be upped to 60Mbps.

Those on 50Mbps will be increased to 100Mbps. Customers already on the top 100Mbps tariff will be raised to 120Mbps - the fastest speed Virgin Media is currently able to provide.

Virgin is a juggernaut on broadband speed but i do find them quite sneaky with regards to their speed and how you can use it.

I just signed up to netflix which allows me to stream HD films or TV progs and just 1 of them watched in the day before 9pm would see me exceed virgins fair usage policy on the M package of 900Mb before 3pm and 450Mb 4pm-9pm. Therefore they will restrict my speed to 1Mbit/Sec down and 128Kbit/Sec up.

It's a 2.5Mbit/Sec cap on the L package and 5Mbit on XL.

Pleased about this - I'm currently on 10mb. I didn't know there was a fair use policy though, I mean, not one that could be hit that easily?

I'm streaming music vids a lot of the time via the muzutv app on my TV... Never been throttles back.

Maybe the policy is stricter on customers who have to use their BT line to get the broadband?

From February 2012, our engineers will be working up and down the country, upgrading our fibre optic network area by area. It’s a massive job that will take up to 18 months to complete.
There’s no need to take any action for the time being. We’ll be in touch soon about when you can expect your area to be upgraded.

I see, so it's a physical upgrade unlike previously when they've upped my speed for free within their current capacity.
