Variable speed limit on the M25
Around Heathrow way on the M25 there is a variable speed limit. Now I have a question because around my way now on the M25 (Essex area) has the similar gantry's with what looks like a similar set-up?!
I do not think they are set-up yet though. Around the Heathrow end, are they always ready to strike or only when a variable speed limit is in place.. EG, if they are not on you could in theory do 90 through them fine?!

Found this info
### Can confirm that the M25 cameras you refer to were calibrated on 29th Dec and are now set exactly at ACPO guidelines (see table below). These cameras were converted to digital in 2008 and previous to that and the variable speed limit being introduced were actually set at a fixed 93 mph. Limit Threshold 20 mph 25 mph 30 mph 35 mph 40 mph 46 mph 50 mph 57 mph 60 mph 68 mph 70 mph 79 mph The cameras are live all the time, however I am aware that not all violations are prosecuted, not sure why (maybe ask your contacts at the Met?). You are quite correct that not all installations have camera and radar equipment in them and they are moved between gantries but not all that regular. Hope this does not mean you have been caught and are looking for a way out? If you need anything else just shout Best regards ##### |

Which ones are you talking about? Essex M25 or the Heathrow/Surrey ones?
Because the Essex ones have not been there since 2008, about 6 months max. Are you saying that if the ''Variable limit'' is not on they are not or ARE active mate? I have not been around the Heathrow ones. I just saw a few people nailing it through the new Essex ones thats all.

Think what he is saying is that they're active all the time but will only be triggered about 93mph if no variable limit is in place, i.e National Speed Limit.
If the gantry signs are lit up, the above limit thresholds apply! |

Personally, I would not mess with them. Neither do most other drivers, where there is no variable speed limit, the traffic magically seems to accelerate to about 80mph.
Also not all of the cameras are in the Tom Tom database. Don't put all your faith in Tom Tom. |

No not really. There is no signs saying "variable limit" so presume it's ok at the moment.

Not every gantry has cameras, including gantries which have signs. You can really only tell which ones do after you have passed under them and look in the rear view mirror.

I drive that section a lot, I always stick to 80 on cruise (77 actual), but I regularly see people blasting through at 90+ and I've never seen a camera actually go off.
