Need thinner oil, or oil thinner

So here is my situation, my car has a tick during the first cold start of a day when it is below freezing, 32F. The whole discussion is here:
http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=629178

What oil thinners should I look at?

Also, what about running a thinner oil just for the remainder of winter? Which should I use? BMW recommends Castrol Syntec European Formula SAE 0W-30, Mobil 1 SAE 0W-40, Pennzoil Platinum European Formula Ultra SAE 5W-30, and Valvoline SynPower SAE 5W-30. I only plan to use it for the remainder of the winter months then go back to BMW's oil under the remainder of the previous owner's extended maintenance plan.

ticking does no damage to your engine v. running too thin of oil potentially puts a TON of wear on moving parts, especially if you rev the crap out of it. I would error on having some ticking noise but protecting my engine v. the other way around

Castrol Syntec European Formula SAE 0W-30 is thinner when cold than the BMW oil (5W30), and would provide better cold start protection. You can use this oil year round as it's the same weight when hot.

In the other thread I was told different oil would do nothing. I did order Lubri Moly MOS2 though.

Still, when you do change the oil, go with the Castrol 0W30, it will provide better cold start protection, espec. in your winters.

My mechanic used an additive called Molyslip. It worked to stop the ticking for me. On very very cold days (well below freezing) I can only hear the tick if I open the hood. By the time the engine is warm it is completely gone if I open the hood.

In all cases the tick is inaudible with the hood closed or from inside the car. He wanted me to degunk my engine before the next oil change too, he saw a bit of sludge in there.

How would be degunk it, with an oil additive? I'm curious because, I plan on doing a lot of maintenance to my car in may.
