18 vs 19 inch - better performance?

So, a couple of things to keep in mind - I live in Boston, so the road conditions and not 100% conducive for extremely small sidewalls. Also, IMHO, the look of 19 in rims on the 335i begins to get a little big (I dislike the 'wagonwheel' look with small brake rotors). Also, I understand that the total weight goes up by upgrading to the 19's (assuming the same rim and tire)

SO, I will be shelving my 162's for winter tires, and I need to pick up a new set of rims. I have been leaving towards 18's because it seems like performance and ride quality are better than 19's (plus, I can save money by re-using the stock tires). But, I can easily upgrade to 19's if I want to.

1. Is there any performance decrease by upgrading to 19's (assuming same exact rim type and tire)?

2. Is handling sacrificed ni any way with upgrading to 19'S?

Thanks in advance. Since the 18's and 19's both look great, I am not interested in the cosmetic improvement if 19's. I am simply to get the best performance between 18 and 19 inches.

"the look of 19 in rims on the 335i begins to get a little big"

I'm completely in the other camp on this one. Small wheels with poor offsets look horrible on this body style. I have the 19" Morr 162's on 265/30/19 on the back. Total 1/8th inch taller then stock and no codes or problems. I think you will find wheel weight has more effect on performance then a 1/8th inch height difference (plus I have 10mm more rubber on the road for traction).

Im in exactly the same boat. I live in Istanbul Turkey, the roads arent amazing but i love the look of 19" wheels on the E92. What i wanna know is if there will be a big difference in ride comfort between 18" and 19" wheels. Also are there any measure that can be taken with 19" wheels to make the ride as comfortable as possible, like using nitrogen to fill the tyres?

Thanks in Advance

Magna3 - were those 19" forged or cast? Do you know the weights of the 19's by Morr? Personally, I dislike the 162's (that is why I am dropping them to be winter rims), but the 19' 162's look pretty nice.

IMHO, the 19" 162s look pretty good because they don't show too much of the 'rotor gap' with enarging the rim beyond what the brake rotors previoulsy filled. Of course, I am primarily talknig about nightmare of 18's on Civics and such, that came with 14 or 15 inch rims

I think upgrading from 18" will decrease the beginning accelerating speed 0~25MPH but will make your car handle better.

Does anyone track the car with 19's? I was just wondering at what point do you lose handling because the rubber is too low?

Actually the downside of tracking 19" wheels comes from the extra weight of the wheels

I say through dem 20" dubs on dat bish!

You just need to ask yourself how much in looks you can sacrafice for better performance. If you go smaller wheels, do an open face rim with no lip (like M6 wheels). They al;ways look bigger then they actually are.

Not sure, but I think they are forged. Weight with tires was less then a pound heavier then my 18" 162's. I'm sure others here know the actual weight.

I was parked next to a 335 with the 18" 162's. The 19" rims look far better.

Ride is actually less abrasive now without RFTs. Less direct shock when you hit a pothole.

The only forged wheel MORR makes is (or will be) CSL style VS7. Those 162s reps in 19" are Low Pressure cast. Just FYI

If you're going to consider tracking the car, then weight, ride comfort, and acceleration changes are not the only considers. There is a significant difference in tire availability between 18" and 19". The edge going to 18"

Guys will the ride comfort be very different with 19" then with 18" i mean if its gonna be a noticable difference then maybe 18" would be the safest bet for me. What do you think?

Anytime you have more rubber (taller sidewall), the ride is going to be better.

I'm going with 18" because the roads here in the US are not good. I don't want to have to deal with bent rims. Usually, 19" rims have a lower profile tire and you are more susceptible to bending them when you hit a pothole. Is it going to make that much of a difference on the street?
