Stutter in high gears/lower RPM
Hello all, relatively new to the board. I have read a bunch of threads and have some ideas on what the cause might be, but wanted to get validation.
Basically if I floor it around 2500 rpms in 4th, 5th, or 6th gear the car accelerates, but it is not smooth. It feels like a single cylinder misfire to me, but no codes. It seems to disappear once I hit 4K rpm. WOT in lower gears all the way to redline don't exhibit the symptoms. The car is a 2008 335i/6MT with 32K on the clock. I have some plugs ready to go in, and I already tried the Chevron fuel additive (concentrated) for a tank with no difference. It seems like the VANOS sensors might also be a possible culprit? Or possibly a coil/injector? It seems like on the latter triggers codes in most cases. Idle is pretty much rock solid at 600 rpm. |

Change your spark plugs first! Only use spark plugs from BMW, as others have found issues with plugs bought from outside sources. be sure to check your coil packs and "boot tubes" for any trace misfire leaks.

OK, I changed them out. Cyl 1 (closes to the headlights) had a fuel smell and was blacker than the other plugs. My PN on the injector was 1353 758 5261-07, which I think is the replacement injector part already.
I will see if my symptoms have subsided on the highway or not. |

DOUBLE CHECK GAPPING!!!! there have been countless people on here change plugs, have issues, and continue to troubleshoot other things waisting time only to find out their "Pre-gapped" plugs weren't all gapped right!

I did check all the plug gaps on the new plugs and they looked good. I did some testing on the highway and things looked good, it feels 95% better! There are some very minor oscillations, which I think is probably just normal operation of the car. It feels much much smoother.

I remember reading a few posts here on the e90 forum from guys who had changed their spark plugs and had a miss fire afterwards. In both caes they had bought OEM plugs not from a BMW dealer. It was only after they replaced the spark plugs with plugs bought from a BMW dealer that the miss fire went away. One would think Bosch spark plugs are the same no matter where you buy them from. But they are not. I bought my plugs thru my bmw dealer - bc I just did not want to do the job twice. The plugs that I bought from my BMW dealer say BMW BOSCH ZGR6STE2 on them. |

Mine did this and then finally started throwing codes for a misfire in one of the cylinders once i replace the coil pack for that cylinder issued was resolved. So maybe a coil pack is going bad but it is not bad enough to throw a misfire code yet.
