Car Overheated on the highway

Hey guys

Today while driving my car (for about 20 mins), a yellow light appeared saying that my car is overheating. About 10 seconds later, a Red overheating light came up, and my car began to slow down. I didnt get a check engine light or anything.

So, I pulled over to the side of the road and inspected the car. I didnt see any coolant leaks, but I did top it off with some coolant I had in the trunk.

I started the car up again, it seemed to be running good so I drove off. About a mile down the road, the same thing happened again.

I called towing and they towed it to BMW. I think it might be the thermostat, but what do you guys think it could be?

I have a jb4, intercooler, dps, dci. I didnt get a chance to take out the jb4, it was about 20 degrees outside and I was wearing a Tshirt.

Is the dealership gonna come around and fuck me in the ass when they see all my mods? What should I do?

Thanks!

most likely your electic water pump. they fail regularly on these cars. 2007 should be out of warranty, unless your CPO'd. either way, water pump is not related to bolt-ons or tune, so you shouldn't have any problems

^ you think so?

Do you think they will try to say that my mods have caused it and that the warranty wont cover it?

Thanks for the fast reply

if they do, just be nice and reason with them that electric water pumps fail regularly on 335i's. the warranty should be upheld. hopefully, you put the jb4 on map 0 and turned off autoclear

clear all codes and pull your jb4 before you take it to the dealer. Your after market parts won't cause the water pump failure so they can't directly link the mods to the pump and they are required by law to replace it under warranty if they can't show the mods were the direct cause of the failure.

Water pump or theromostat. I had the yellow and red warning one time.....but went away when I restarted my car and hasn't come back in over 25K miles. If you need a new one, it's a tedious install and might cost a pretty penny if out of warranty. At a minimum, I'd remove the tune and DCI's, the rest shouldn't effect anything but you should be fine with your JB4 in at map 0.

Don't feel bad...when out of warranty just about everything cost $1200 it seems. Literally 2 weeks out of warranty, I needed to replace my SZL ($1200) and just recently my tranny pan was leaking ($750). She's an expensive car to own past warranty thats for sure. I realize both of those were probably DIY items, I just wish I had the time in my day to fix things. However, anything driven off of the engine (water/oil/fuel pumps) is going to be very hard DIY and labor intensive.

Yea I can see that now.
So if they say it's the pump or thermostat, but we're not gonn cover it since you have aftermarket parts. I can say that I know it's a common problem and that you guys need proof that my performance parts are causing it?

Hopefully it slides lol

Ive read too many stories on here about warranty work not being covered due to aftermarket parts. Consider your self very lucky if you get the work covered under CPO.

Water pump, thermostat or Fan. Yes Fan! I had exact experience, thought obvious thermostat or pump, turned out to be electrical failure of some kind, fan wouldn't kick in all the time when it was supposed to. No codes other than over heating were found, but didn't take dealer too long to replicate and pin point it. Oh I had about 18K miles on the 1yr old car then.

When the thermostat fails it is stuck in the open position so it shouldn't cause overheat... correct me if I'm wrong.

dealt with this issue twice in the past two months. the first was due to a bad water pump....so i had the pump and thermostat replaced. then recently same overheating issue again....i'm thinking did i get a bad pump. it turned out to be a bad power distribution block on top of the battery...the bad connection caused the built-in fuse to blow which powers the water pump. they replaced the power distribution block and the water pump was operating just fine.

Next time have it towed to your house. It's very easy for the dealer to deny warranty. He could say the tune caused the engine to produce more heat and increase the duty cycle of the pump. Consider yourself lucky if they don't

Ok guys, I got a call today. It was the water pump that went bad. They are replacing it tomorrow. It will be covered under cpo warranty. He didn't even say anything about the mods. Thanks for your help guys!

Same thing happened to me this morning on the way to work. Literally overheated in front of my office. Went to work for an hour and then drove it to the nearest BMW dealer- went limp as soon as i pulled into the service department conveniently. I am on CPO so hopefully it is the same quick fix. PS. Did you have to pay a $50 CPO charge for them to perform the service? UGHHH
