Part number/name Question - Engine Cover related - NEED HELP!
Part number/name Question - Engine Cover related - NEED HELP!
Didn't know where to post this specifically, so its going here.... On a friends car today, while putting the engine cover back on, the part where the engine cover bolts screw in to became cross threaded and basically stripped. Its the female part that is stripped. The part where the bolt screws into is on top of the manifold, and has a metal piece pushed into it that the bolt already screws into. Sorry, don't know the names of any of these parts. ANYHOW, I am looking for information and part numbers. I want to know how I can get the metal insert removed, and get a new one in there, that isn't stripped, so the bolt can be properly screwed downed. Below is a picture from a different car of the metal insert type piece that I am referring to, it is circled (even though this is from the part of an intake, the part I am referring to is what the engine cover bolts into on top of the manifold). Sorry, didn't take an actual picture today... ANY IDEAS my friends? |

You could get a tap set and rethread it. Honestly, you don't need all 4 screws. When I was having misfire issues, I took the cover off dozens of time while swapping plugs/coils and left the two back bolts out. I never put them back in because I makes getting the cover off and back on that much easier/quicker.

Sounds like part #4:
http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...68&hg=11&fg=15 I would take the cover back off and compare with the diagram to be sure. |

I'm not seeing the part available separately. What you could do is picking up a tapping tool and re thread the stripped part (go slightly larger). Then pick up a slightly large bolt which will match your new threads at the hardware store.
