Question M3U audio playlists

I have a 2007 E92 with CCC and I use a 250GB external 1.8" HD with about 22K songs, all in MP3 format. I always browse songs by directory, not using artist/title/genre tags because caching that takes too long with such a large collection every time I start the car.

I just now added some M3U playlists to a separate directory on the HD but if I browse there it shows up as empty. Can playlists only be used via the artist/title/genre/playlist concept, or should I be able to browse by directoty just as I do with my MP3 files, indicating a problem with the playlist files? I generated them with MediaMonkey and they look valid in a text editor. The file extension is lowercase .m3u - should it perhaps be uppercase?

Thanks for any pointers...

I used mp3tag to create these m3u playlists and they are working absolutely fine.
I have 2008 328i no-nav.
