Smoke and Oil Consumption to the Max

I\'ve been searching and reading through the threads available on this topic. A lot of advice but no actual solutions.

I have noticed three scenarios when my car smokes like a 60 year old hag:

1. Coming to a stop after a couple of minutes or more of freeway driving. Car releases between one and a couple puffs of smoke.

2. Letting the car idle in my driveway. It takes a couple of minutes then it starts smoking out of the exhaust.

3. During medium to WOT on the highway in a high gear. Such as acceleration from 50-60 in 6th. It releases a nice cloud of smoke. Not enough to smoke up the road but enough to notice.

I am also going through oil like a madman. If I didn\'t change oil every 5000 miles it would need topping off.

Catless exhaust. COBB stage 2 .

Would this be due to the turbos?

Me thinks turbo seals. You can try going to a thicker weight oil and see if it helps.

I think were too quick to blame the seals. I had this same issue (even smoke under the hood) over a year ago in December, continued to smoke almost everyday then magically it stopped when the wamer weather hit. I basically ran all summer with no issue whatsoever. I began to change my oil every 3-5K miles instead of the 10-15K which might have aleviated the issues. Now I have different turbos and they have been running great! Still using BMW 5W30. I feel your pain....time for you to get some upgraded turbos.

My only other guess would be the oil lines going to the front turbo were leaking.

Ideally I would like to be wrong, and its possible. However, the amount of smoke and oil does correlate. As I said maybe try a thicker weight first.

Count me in on that one. Mine has barely 25K miles on it and it does not smoke all the time. It smokes mostly during idle and mostly if I let it idle for a longer period of time. I can even pinpoint it to the driver side exhaust as I have fully divorced exhaust setup.

Right now, the oil consumption is not too concerning as it burns about 1 qt every 3000 miles. This is a recent development though. For the first year, my car did not consume any oil between 7500 mile oil change interval.

No whining siren sound yet though...

I think in the case of my car, it is definitely a turbo seal problem. It looks like that new turbos will be in my future soon, but for the time being, I am taking the wait-and-see approach. I believe/hope that by the time mine finally give out, we will have affordable turbo upgrades for our cars.

So a thicker weight might be worth trying. I thought Dzenno tried that and went back to the BMW recommended oil as it smoked less that way...

What weight would you recommend then?

Stock is 5w 30. So maybe try 0w 40 or 5w 40. Even certain oil brands are thicker in the same weight class. But that is beyond the scope of thread. I'd like to say dont worry about how someone elses car reacts, every car is different.

My car makes horrible siren noises. Oddly after the dealer replaced the oil filter housing gasket I haven't burned a drop of oil after 50+ 2-3-4 pulls on Cobb stage 2 race and the car runs fine. Oddly the siren noise doesn't come anywhere near the downpipes. It's near the middle-rear of the car.

I run stock oil and I won't mess with it. I might look into switching oils/grades if oil consumption gets worse but I'll most definitely stay with LL-01 approved oils.

The seals themselves do not need back pressure, it's the turbine that is effected by the pressure allowing it to spin more freely. I honestly don't think it's an issue of the free flowing exhaust, running stock exhast with cats is only masking the underlying problem.

He would defintely need to quit his day job to pump out that many sets. According to Rob, he's barely making a profit off of these as his hands are tied to whom he outsources some of the labor to.

With the secondary market for these cars heating up and aftermarket demand rising, maybe expansion is in order.

Well this is just embarrassing so if I can't at least reduce the smoke a little I'm gonna use it as an excuse for upgraded turbos. I would just hate to spend 4000 dollars and still smoke

That was exactly my excuse....funny thing was my OEM's stopped smoking after I pulled the trigger on new ones. I highly doubt your new ones will smoke.

Do you have an AT or MT?

Mine AT is shot and makes upon load a kind of siren noise until it locks...
See my sign..

It's at AT. but I also had a manual N54 which made similar noises just not as bad.

Tranny appears to be just fine though. This noise started 200 miles after this car went tuned.
