Upgraded turbos and stock 6AT questions....

Hey guys, I'm considering the upgraded turbo route but was looking for feedback from the 6AT crowd who has them...

My thing is, I won't be launching this car hard and will be stressed mostly on highway pulls where the torque converter is locked.

What is causing the 6AT to fail under large amounts of power with these upgraded turbos? Is it the clutch packs / torque converter or is it just overall stress?

I think I could live with not launching the car hard without a tranny rebuild. Any thoughts from those with upgraded turbos + 6AT? I know it's a small crowd but feedback would be appreciated.

I know a local guy on RB's with a stock 6AT with no issues yet. I'm gonna go this same route. What I would recommend is making sure that you have $4000 available about a year from now just in case you do manage to go through your AT. I think LM's AT took that long to show signs of wear with the RB's. And Enrita's transmission started slipping right?

If it's wear instead of outright mechanical failure, then it might be the clutch packs that are the weak link.

Just find a crashed 335 at a junkyard or onlinr with a salvagable 6at and then once yours goes , you have a replacement for cheap.

before going for LEVEL10 complete rebuild i considered this option to. i found in germany many trans with low mileage for about 100-1500 euros but how do you know it wont fail again after 6 months?
Just installation and fluid is over 1000 euros.

Well I'm one of the very few who can respond to this. I have RB's with a stock AT and have had no issues. The AT did leak fluid, but I beleive that is a common problem and was fixed. I did a 19 psi run with the 11-1 maps yesterday, and it was the first time I ever felt like something was going to brake! The power was violent to say the least, but the AT held up without any slipping. I only have about 3-4K miles on it since the RB install, so I guess I'll report back at the 10K point. I do strongly feel that a LSD is required to save something broke braking (Half shafts, torque converter, etc.)

The tranny is simply not rated to handle that kind of power. There are other transmissions that ZF makes that can handle the power, but not ours.

To answer your question more directly, it would seem it's burnt 3rd gear clutch packs from excessive heat build up.

I would say the clutch packs would be the weak point. Personally I think the trans also takes a hard 3rd-4th gear shift at 100mph. As far as LSD, etc, the more traction you have down low, the more likely the trans is going to fail. With slicks, and spiking traction, 2nd gear is very vulnerable too. Slight wheel spin is actually your friend when it comes to trans stress during the shifts.

When I think about how great a turbo upgrade would be, the trans issues become my first concern.
